Upping milk supply...

My 7 week old boy has been BF in the day and formula fed at night. I started giving formula because I felt that come the evening, I had nothing to offer him and the poor child was just starving hungry. I've decided to try and up my milk supply with the objective of either cutting back the formula feeds or cutting out totally. I'd welcome advice on how to do this.

Yesterday I phoned la leche league and spoke to a lovely lady who advised me to basically go 'cold turkey' and just BF whenever my boy needs feeding, even when it feels like he's getting nothing. She was confident my milk would quickly increase, and was really non-judgemental and helpful. I feel like this is a bit drastic and unfair on my boy - why should he be grumpy and hungry because I've changed my mind about how to feed him? So last night, my lovely husband did the night feeds with formula and I got up and pumped 15 mins at the same time, so my boy got fed as usual but my boobs got extra stimulation. I got about a fl oz out of each boob at each pumping.

Today I've fed, fed and fed. At about 3pm, he started getting hungry even after feeding on both boobs twice, so we gave him the breast milk I'd expressed in the night. I feel like my boobs have had the extra stimulation they need. Also I've started taking fenugreek capsules to see if that helps.

At present, my boy gets formula at roughly 7pm, 10pm, 2am and 5am. I'd like to drop the 7pm formula feed tonight if I can, and then in the next week or so, I'd like to drop the 10pm formula feed so he only gets formula during the night itself. If I manage to do that, I'll decide what to do about the night feeds. I can't ask the husband to do both night feeds on a 'school night' and don't really know what to do during the week as regards night feeds.

I'll try and keep updating this thread to let you know how I get on. Any advice would be more than welcome.

Don't twist yourself into knots with guilt over giving formula - remember EVERY breastfeed counts so even if you stop bfing today you have done a fantastic job with all the milk you have given him.

Rather than put him down as soon as he has fallen asleep, have you tried breast compressions? They help to keep a baby actively feeding when they may be more inclined to doze off during a feed. Baby will wake if they aren't full up with milk when put down and will then want feeding again. The pattern will probably look like this:-

Baby tired and starts crying/making 'milky' noises
Mum starts to feed baby
Baby falls asleep
Mum puts baby down
Baby wakes up and cries for feed
Mum starts to feed baby....ad naseum

What you want is:-
Baby tired and starts crying/making 'milky' noises
Mum starts to feed baby
Baby stops actively suckling/starts to fall asleep (Obv. don't wait for baby to fall asleep but if he does Mum chucks under chin/tickles feet/strokes ear/cheek)
Baby rouses/starts actively suckling again as Mum starts breast compression
Continue with compressions as long as baby will feed other that side and then swap to other side and repeat.

I hope this may help you. Dr Jack Newman has some really helpful videos here so you can see what active suckling (aka 'really good drinking') looks like and a mum doing breast compressions (9th video down).

Wanted to just add that if you want to breastfeed, then yes, do keep on trying as it will all be worth it in the end. (And it does get much easier once you get past this point, 6-8 weeks is a difficult point and for me it all became easier from then on.)

But on the other hand, if you are doing it just because you feel you should, then it's okay to switch to formula if you want to, don't feel guilty. As TruthSweet said you have done a fantastic job already.

Do what is right for you and your baby - the support will be here for you whichever way you choose to go.

Thank you both. I'm quite emotional about it today, have worked myself into a bit of a state, which is ridiculous. I hugely appreciate the advice and the support.

Oh Cyclista, have a (((hug))) Just think, in a year's time you will be chasing around after a toddler and this will all seem a million years ago. You will get there

Morning Cyclista, how are you and ds doing?

Cyclista · 11/01/2010 09:27

Morning

We're doing okay thank you! Yesterday wasn't as good as Saturday, DS was just so hungry. So I've amended the plan to offer both boobs at each feed and then offer formula in case he's still hungry. Last night, he had 5 oz of formula after both boobs, so clearly he was still peckish. But today is a new day and we'll keep going. Hoping the fenugreek kicks in today.

Glad your doing well, you can swap him from L to R and back to L then R several times.

You could also reduce the formula amount to encourage him to latch frequently which will help milk production.

HELP!! Am wanting to take fenugreek to help boost my milk supply but am getting conflicting advise re the dose. Went to local health food shop and was advised to take 2 tabs 3 times a day of their abs which are - raw fenugreek seed powder 370mg and fenugreek seed powdered extract 150mg.
then looked on line and it mentions dose of up to 2 610mg tabs 3 times a day.
What has anyone else been told / what is the consensus on a dose.
Or should I just carry on increasing until I smell like maple syrup!

HELP!! I also want to start taking fenugreek to boost the boobs but seem to get loads of conflicting advise re the dose.

Doing a web search suggested a dose of 2 610mg tabs three times a day.

went to my local very good health food shop and they have given me tabs which say - raw fenugreek seed powder 370mg and fenugreek seed extract 150mg and said take 2 tabs three times a day.

Dose this tally with what others have done?

Or do i go on upping the dose till I smell of maple syrup!?
