Hi there wondering if anyone can help me please I weaned DD who is 2 and a half off her bed time breastfeed 2 weeks ago. I have not expressed as I did not feel engorged however I am gradually begining to feel the usual signs of mastitus (headache slight temp and bad temper!). Possibly there are two small lumps in my breasts but it is hard to tell. Does anyone have any advice as to what they did when they weaned? I am unsure if I should be expressing or using compresses etc. I have had recurrent mastitus.

I'm not an expert at all and someone will probably correct me. But with my second baby I kept getting mastitis and ending up on antibiotics, when I finally weaned him, I did exactly what you did and then started to get symptoms and a week after stopping when my breast was still lumpy and painful I expressed thinking they'd be nothing in there, as I'd been cutting the feeds down gradually over time etc but lo and behold when I expressed something did come out and once I was sure all was empty, the lumps had gone.

I think I expressed just here and there when lumps appeared, until I fully dried up. That seemed to do the trick for me and I got better again.

Never tried compresses myself. If no one else replies and it gets more painful, definitely go to GP again hon.

Maybe try expressing just a little bit like teaandcake did. I don't think it would really bring your milk back unless you expressed for ages and might just move things along just a touch and ease your discomfort. Although if the temperature and other symptoms haven't gone away on Monday you may need ABs.
