How many calories daily would be ok whilst breastfeeding? ds2 is 5 months in just over a week, eb not weaning for a few weeks yet and i just want to make sure there wil be no effect on milk supply if i am on the slim fast diet and on around 1200 kcal daily, this is my 3rd day of dieting

I think you are supposed to have a minimum of 500 extra calories for bf and need to make sure you are having enough calcium.

I know Slimming World is suitable for pregnant women and bf, you can adapt the plan to suit both and it has the advantage of eating normal food (in surprisingly large quantities )
Not sure about Slimfast though.

Good luck

it does say on the slimfast tins on closer inspection that bf and slimfast are ok but im a bit worried about supply with such restricted calories, i am having breakfast and lunch a slimfast shake, plenty of fruit and raw veg for snacking, and a healthy tea in the evening eg. chicken breast salad, veg stir fry cooked in a smidgen of olive oil, noodles, roast salmon with peppers and rice. i desperately need to loose 3 stone though...

This might be helpful

Thanks montifer i guess i'll just have to go at it slightly slower then as i don't want ds to be affected

Good luck knick. DD1 is 5mo in a couple of days and I have at least 2 st to loose. Been struggling away on WW support thread but not going well.

Sounds like you have your meals sorted!

Ditto my worries re brf. At least she' s taking the bottle with ff now...maybe allows for trips to the gym

Good luck!

knicknack - if its any help, I found that with BF, once my babies reached 5.6 - 6 months, the weight suddenly started dropping off.

knicknack · 03/01/2010 14:15

I hope so this time wotmania! with ds1 it took me about 30months to loose wieght then when i was almost there and into size 12 i got pg with ds2! anyway this time i wont let it get like that i am determined to do it, i have my food ect all planned out and i have just got a prezzie of an entire ww thingy regarding calories and i have a workout dvd to do and ds1's mahoosive trampoline in the garden Maybe we could encourage each other Hermomminess when we feel like breaking the diet?

i think you know if you're not eating enough - in my experience (i've breatsfed 5 babies) i start feeling extra tired and weak if i forget to feed myself. i think you suffer before your baby. i once had flu when pregnant and couldn't eat a thing for days and my son carried on chomping happily at the boob regardless. i also agree with wotmania - weight drops off once you start weaning them and you suddenly have more energy to exercise.

knicknack · 03/01/2010 14:40

yes garibaldigirl i also ha the flu a few months back and ds2 was still chomping away too so hopefully i will get the best of both and be able to loose wieght whilst breastfeeding (oh and wow bf 5 babies!!!) i think the mistake i made when i'd had ds1 was not anough exercise and eating too much of the wrong stuff i am now at my heviest ever though at 13 and a bit stone at 5'5 and i look horrible and i dont want to look like this come the summer time.
