Exercise+breast feeding = acidic milk??

I was told today that a gym instructor had told a breastfeeding mum that she should express the next two feeds after exercising because she would be producing lactic acid. Apparently this then gets into the breast milk and makes it taste sour. Is this true???

It sounds a bit dodgy to me, but you never know...

Depends on the exercise. If strenuous exercise she may have a point - DS1 never fed well from me immediately after a work out but was fine an hour or so after with feeds. I found it generally worked best if I bf him before a work out.

Here

Intensive exercise may make the milk taste slightly different but it's not harmful and there's certainly no reason to pump and dump.

bristols - this gym instructor needs educating. "Expressing the next two feeds" . And the baby is to eat what, in the meantime? If it's expressed milk, then the mother has had the hassle of expressing all that milk even before the exercise.

As quoted here, the production of lactic acid is harmless and very temporary anyway.

Sounds like a great excuse to explain why I never went to buggyfit with the other girls from antenatal

Totally using that old wives' tale to avoid any exercise after next DC! Great minds NyumNyum...

I find dd won't feed as well on the nights straight after my very strenuous) yoga class, she is nearly 2 though, so it's not a worry if she doesn't have much.

So I think it is true however, everything I have ever read suggests it is gone after about an hour, I wouldn't dream of pumping and dumping Your instructor is a twunt.

When I said the instructor may havea point I meant about breastmilk tasting different post strenuous exercise - not about pumping and dumping (forgot to say that in my earlier post )
