Help! my pump is broken, would you buy another at this stage?

I am torn! DD is 16 weeks old and is ex bf. i have been expressing since about 4 weeks, have built up a small stock in the freezer and now DD takes a bottle of EBM at my bedtime, so the freezer stock isnt being added to.anyway, this last couple of days, my pump seems to be on its way out - i had oit from DD1 so it is about 4 years old. The question is, do I get another one? or just use up the ebm i have and then go to formula? Or can i sort my supply out so that i can bf again at 10ish? I never seem to have much milk at that time anymore. I had hoped to feed exclusively till just before i go back to work at 8mo.

WWYD?

Well if you're in two minds you could always get a hand-pump so you've still got the option.

How's the reflux?

olivo · 13/12/2009 11:50

Hello LTJ ! I have got the hand pump that comes wih it but i'm lazy not very good at it!
reflux is heaps better thanks, DD has now been on domperidone for about 2 months and hardly any vomiting or acid - she is so much happier and even sleeps through the night! I'm so glad i went back.
how about you?

You don't have any milk at that time because you are giving the bottle of EBM at that time, its a supply and demand thing.

olivo · 13/12/2009 12:43

thanks, Poo (!).i understand the supply and demand thing, but will it come back and how can i get DD to do it? i started ebm as she wouldnt wake up enough to do a dream bf, and wasnt taking much if i successfully got her latched on. i do express just before i give her the ebm but only get an ounce or two.

Similarly much better, Olivo - the ranitidine did the trick eventually. Glad you're much better too - those were dark days, weren't they?

If you'd planned to feed to 8 months I'd get another in that case - you're only halfway through...

FiveSoloRings · 13/12/2009 13:07

The more you feed, the more you should produce, so even if you don't have enough for Dd at 10pm, you may be able to give her a top up at about 11 or even do it earlier? say at 9? it wont take long to get into producing more anyway.

Personally, I never had that problem, I just put Dd on whenever she wanted it ~ which was often and it was there. don't worry over it though.
I was able to pump about a pint a day on top of bfing with Ds, but failed to get much at all with Dd...but she's almost 3 and still bfing pretty much whenever she wants.

Good luck!

olivo - learn to hand express. It is cheaper than a pump and never breaks

mears · 13/12/2009 13:12

Didn't see last point. Yes you can breastfeed at 10pm again.

mears · 13/12/2009 13:19

video showing how it is done

olivo · 13/12/2009 19:56

thanks.
Mears, i have tried hand expressing but was no good at it. will watch the video though, and maybe try again. I guess i'm just impatient - this time around, i can generally get a full feed expressed in about 10-15mins with my electric pump.
went to have a look this afternoon and even though they are on special offer, they're still over 60 quid

How much would it cost you in formulas though? Might be a false economy not to slash out on a new pump.

mears · 13/12/2009 23:42

what about this hand pump?

I have numerous friends who have found this one really good and it is only £18

mears · 13/12/2009 23:44

I used a pump with my first 3 babies and then mastered hand expressing and found that I could express feeds much faster. It really is a bit of mind over matter and practice. Once it clicks, you will never look back

BackUpYourPhotosNow · 13/12/2009 23:59

What about ebay??? Lots of people buy a pump use it once and never bother again, you would want to sterilise it but once sterilised it would be fine surely?

If you planned to go till 8 mnths stick with it you are doing so well

BackUpYourPhotosNow · 14/12/2009 00:01

reasons to be proud

nappyaddict · 14/12/2009 02:27

I would try and get a second hand one. Avent Isis is meant to be good.

Longtinsellyjosie · 14/12/2009 08:15

I've just had a look on ebay for you - there are some very cheap ones - a mini Medela there with 4 hours to go, currently at £1.20...

QandA · 14/12/2009 08:18

If it is just the mechanism that is broken, then get one from ebay that is the same brand as the one you currently have then you can reuse the bits that the milk pumps through iyswim.

olivo · 14/12/2009 08:18

thank you all. it is the avent isis pump i have, has done me well as i bought it 4 years ago! I am going to try the hand expressing again and am going to keep an eye out for a sseoncd hand one - it is the motor part that is buggered so would be able to use the other bits of my own.
Failing that, I will see if i have enough boots points to get something.
thanks for your support.
