why do babies scrabble about with the boob?

my ddd is mauling my nork as i type and does so every feed these days. i find it intensely bothersome.

why do they do this

pummel, pummel, claw, claw

it is very vaguely cute except it hurts

dd does it as well. I think it's a comfort thing (for baby obv - not us!). She reminds me of a cat doing that kind of padding thing they do with their paws where they draw their claws in and out!

My dd not only claws away at me, but pinches my arm if I tuck a tentacle under it. She also likes to come off and clutch the nipple with her fingernails. Awww.

I tried to bite her nails to keep them short but because I've never been a nailbiter myself, I had no idea how to do it, it's now DH's job.
