Aptamil : Breast Milk Substitute?

MrUmble · 06/12/2009 23:45

Hi all,
Anyone noticed that the new packs of Aptamil have "Breast Milk Substitute" on the front in massive letters?

I thought they werent allowed to this, in fact I remember the old boxes saying something like "not a substitute for breast milk"

Has something changed?

Technically, it is a substitute and they are permitted to describe it as such.

The WHO Code on marketing of formula and bottles is called the Code on the Marketing of Breast Milk Substitutes.

wasn't it that they weren't allowed to say it is as good as breast milk. But yes it is a substitute, you can give iyt to babies instead of breast milk.

Aha....just realised where the confusion begins.

On follow on milks, packages may say 'not intended as a breast milk substitute'. This means they can dodge the regulations in the UK about promotion and marketing of 'infant' formula which is a breastmilk substitute.

Of course, follow on is a breastmilk substitute, because babies in the UK (per guidance) cannot have cows milk as a main drink until the age of 12 months, so must have breastmilk or formula.

But the law, and nutritional guidance, are not the same.

TikTok - those packages and associated adverts (follow on ones) always create a storm in the Hobbit house. I usually rant for at least half an hour along the lines of "Well, if it's not a breastmilk substitute what do they intend us to do with it? Creosote the fence, perhaps. Or paint the nursery" To which himself groans and says "not that b**dy ad again".
