How to keep occupied while feeding at night?

When you're up on your own at three in the morning, what do you do to keep occupied?

I've tried reading, staring at the ceiling - just get sooooo bored!

Any suggestions?

I will be reading trash tonight unless utterly zombified where I manage to sleep sitting up. If I feed her lying down we both fall asleep and she doesn't feed properly and more importantly I don't sleep properly.

If its around 5/6am I'll listen to Radio 4.

bbc radio 7

i'm with kathy on this one. learn to feed lying down with your eyes closed!

dc3 wasn't much cop (had a few issues which complicated feeding and required attention lol) so i had to be awake really, but honestly, why would you, given the option?

i can't believe so many of you do so much stuff! i was sleep deprived enough without any other activities to concentrate my energy on

Hello im new here

with all of my kids ive fed and gone back to sleep.
cosleeping kept me sane! YS was a terrible sleeper and i only survived by sleeping with him.

i did however use the light of the DS to help him latch on in the early weeks.

I take my little one off to his own room to change his nappy and fed him so as not to wake OH. But this morning we were up for 2 1/2 hours with him constantly feeding and being wide awake at 3am!

Would love to sleep at the same time, just too scared.

I do love reading, and when its just an hour here and there its fine, but the feeds seem to be getting longer - so thanks everyone for the ideas!

wireless internet connection, netbook/laptop and MN or online shopping!

This thread has made me all nostalgic... When my dd was feeding all night, one of the books that made me love night feeding was Sarah Waters' 'The Night Watch'. This time round with my son it was 'The Little Stranger'. I'm hoping that I'll be reading her next one during daylight hours...

Reesie · 03/12/2009 22:34

Are you guys mad??? What on earth are doing getting out of bed and trying to keep awake? Aren't you already tired? I'll definately second the feeding lying down on my side. I usually sleep through feeds.

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 03/12/2009 22:42

never fed in bed but did have a fab reclining feeding chair and stool in DS's room, thick blanket latch on, me snooze. I would sometimes snooze a bit longer than the feed, I loved those middle of the night times with the boys.

BonjourIvressedeNoel · 03/12/2009 22:44

I have a tv in my bedroom and record stuff during the day to watch as night as two channels of teletext at 4am don't appeal.

WingedVictory · 03/12/2009 22:48

DVDs of television series. I got through 11 seasons of MAS*H, whose episodes were just the right length for a feed, so no danger of getting engrossed in a film.

loulou77 · 03/12/2009 23:06

Entire series of Inspector Morse, True Blood, Star Wars (prequel and original trilogies) and Strictly Come Dancing on the iplayer, and lurking here obviously...all on my laptop right next to me... I have square eyes after three DCs

abidgegirl · 03/12/2009 23:26

My iPhone revolutionised night feeds with DC2. Have scrabble, ebooks, email, internet and movies, all backlit, and all usable with just one hand. Has kept me sane through many a night feed, particularly as DD is still going strong with her night feeds despite rapidly approaching her first birthday .

Taramuddle · 03/12/2009 23:46

I'm with you abidgegirl, I think iPhones should be issued to all breastfeeding mothers by the government .

I use my iPhone for facebook mumsnet games etc for late night feeds; I cosleep for the rest. Just me & my ds in bed, dp in other bedroom (nxt to dd for her nighttime cuddle requests! Payback time!)

YanknCock · 03/12/2009 23:52

ipod and podcasts, either in bed or in the nursing chair.

There are loads of podcasts to choose from, and helps to keep up on current events if you get politics/culture ones from BBC or NPR. Or there's sex advice from the Savage Lovecast (not that I'm ever going to have sex again at this rate)....

SleepySheep · 04/12/2009 20:51

How do you manage to watch the tv? My little one has decided that even the nightlight is now fascinating at 3am and wants to stay awake staring at it for hours!
