Can a baby self wean?

My daughter is refusing the breast and she is nearly eight months old. She doesn't have a cold and appears to be well. My son was an avid breastfeeder at this age and I weaned him at two years old. It was a real battle to get my son to wean. I am sure that if he had had his own way he would have weaned very late.

I think she is having a nursing strike. Surely its unheard of for an eight month old baby to self wean.

I think it sounds like a nursing strike as well - possibly teething related? Have you got anything relatively mild like teething gel or the homeopathic powders in that you could try giving her to see if it makes a difference?

I have a similar post up - my dd fed until she was 2 self weaned when pregnant with ds (she was a breast feed addict and didn't eat solids properly until she was 2). ds is 8 months old and gradually been decreasing his feeds - i'm not engorged or anything. a nursing strike seems to be sudden thing. he had 3 sucks in 24 hours yesterday.

giving less solids and water seems to be the advice, both i'm reluctant to do as dd won't eat or drink either and i don't want to go there again.

A phase perhaps I'm going to keep offering.

ds large and healthy so not sure it matters that much. he obviously didn't read the bit about milk being the most important part of his diet until he is one.

my ds is not teething - has 6 teeth already showing no signs of more.

Hi ReallyTired DS also 8months refused all day yesterday, 10 hours in total but then fed at 5pm and fed a lot last night as per usual

Today I have been very persistent, in a nice way of course, as it looked like there was going to be a repeat of yesterday, and this has worked, as he's had two feeds since last night.

I have no idea what is going on and really really hope he is not thinking about self weaning or even reverse cycling . I love BF and found yesterday very emotional!

Check for thrush in her mouth - I am in the same situation with 10 month old bub, she has refused for a day (break out the pump time) and I am sure it's another bout as she is off most of her food and is very grouchy, poor thing. Lucky I have nystatin left over from the last time...
I think the thrush makes it really painful to suck, although bottle seems better - you may be able to express and giver her a bottle instead for a few days?
There are no new teeth appearing either with my one, this is the 3rd bout of thrush- killer.
