Domperidone / Motilium Anyone used it?

DS is almost 6 weeks old, and I am stuggling along woth breast feeding. So I ordered some, which arrived today. I was just wondering if anyone else has had similar experience and what to expect. Did it make a big difference to your supply? What were side effects, if any?

I tried the natural pills...Fenugreek... and they made every bodily excretion smell like maple syrup...

your pills have to be better! I hope they work, I might be using them next time round!

I think starlover used them and found them effective. Think Berolina did too.

To increase milk supply. Domperidone (the active ingredient of Motilium does this and is given to mothers in hospital for just this purpose.

I used Motilium when DS1 was about 6-8 weeks ... seemed to make a difference although please don't expect to see your milk supply increase dramatically, remember supply meets demand etc ... so, for me anyway, no engorgement but happier baby and much happier Mummy! No side effects that I can remember.

I only wish that my supply would meet the demand, hence the domperidone. Hopefully this will improve the situation. Otherwise I'm afraid I'd detined to give up on BF. Hopefully it won't come to that.

yes i used them. i was expressing and normally getting 80ml in morning and 40-50 each other time

increased to over 160ml in mornings and 90+ml all other times!

uwila... why do you think you are not producing enough milk? is baby happy and alert? weeing and pooing? putting on weight?

Well, a couple of reasons really.

1- He is never satisfied after sucking on the boob. So I usually let him suck for 30-40 min on each breast, then offer him a bottle. After drinking the bottle he is quite a happy and goes to sleep for 2-4 hours. But if I were just to give boob, he'll dose of for about 5-10 minures and wake up crying for more. We repeat this routine every 2-4 hours. I try to do every 2 hours, but it's not always possible.

2- The poo in his nappies looks mostly like formula poo, not breastmilk poo. I'd say it's about a 90/10 ratio.

Ther is some milk in there. I'm sure of that, it's just not very much.

Sorry to go on and on about this. If you have any advice for me, it would be very welcome. But, I am quite convinced that the milk supply is rather deficient.

your milk supply WILL suffer if you are supplementing too much with formula. it works on a supply and demand basis... so if he is filling up on formula he won't be "demanding" the breastmilk... and so you won't produce it.

I would try and gradually reduce the amount of formula you give, and your breastmilk should go up

But, starlover, I only give formula after he has spent an hour or so suck on the breasts. I do try to let him go hungry and keep offering breast. But, obviously, he needs to eat something. So if the breast milk isn't available (or not enough of it), I'll give him some formula.

but if you gradually decrease the amount of formula, your milk supply should go up...

have you tried giving him a dummy instead of a bottle. You might find you have 2 or 3 days were your feeding every hour to two hours. knackering but you may find your milk increases in volume. dont beat yourself up about it the more stress you feel the less you produce. if you feel happier giving a bottle give a bottle your baby has had at least 6 weeks worth. breast feeding is hard but it does get easier. been breast feeding for 8 months my ds wont take a bottle. another problem. you could also express. Let your mum friend partner take little one for a few hours and get some sleep in. drink lots of water and eat well night feeds are v important for your milk supply so try and make sure there breast. good luck dont be disheartened as long as your little one is getting fluid and growing thats the main thing

Starlover, how long did you take domperidone? Does it's effectiveness decrease over time? If so,how long?

you can only take it for 14 days at a time.

i found that after i stopped taking it my milk supply decreased again. but i think that was because i wasn't expressing enough.

Oh right. I didn't know there was a 14 day limit. I'll have to look into it. And see if I can start it again after a grace period. Wonder how long that would be. I'll look around the web and see if I can find some mre info. Unless of course some wise mumsnetter might be able to enlighten me.

Uwila, I know this is stressful, from experience and I had to supplement with formula for a few months, due to my baby a poor latch. There is a lot of advice available at sites like Kellymom, but to get your supply to go up, you need to offer your ds a feed as often as possible for a while, like every hour or two during the day. I did use motilium and it made a difference, but I got blocked ducts, which leads me to believe that I probably didn't need it.
I took a supplement from Napiers for ages, which helped me feel confident, it was a tincture of goats rue and alfalfa. You can order it online at Napiers Herbalists. I took it once a day, but you could take it up to three times a day. BUT watch out for blocked ducts when you take these things, any hiccups in feeding then you may suffer.
