Quick question for those of you with preterm babies that are being bottle fed ... my DD was born at 36 weeks weighing 4lbs `2oz (now 6 weeks old and over 6lbs) - she is now still taking 8 feeds a day (3 hour intervals) having 3-4oz (90-120 mil) of formula per feed ... what are others experience .. Im confused as the normal guidelines are to go with the instructions on the box however going by weeks old she should only be on 5 feeds a day which of course is not happening due to her weight and pretermness and also by weight it starts at 7lbs - a milestone she still hasnt reached!! .. I know i should (and i am) just giving her what she wants - but I am interested in others experiences - also when did you find you DC went longer between feeds ie able to drop the 3am feed and then the 11pm feed

my ds (3.5 years old) was also born at 36 weeks was 5lb 11oz and he fed 2 hourly til 6 months old, i have always believed in demand feeding rather than what the box/tin says.

my 11 week old dd was 6lb 10oz at birth (39+3) and was bf til 4 weeks old (trying re-establish supply atm) and she was feeding two hourly then, for the past 3 weeks she has been feeding 3-4 hourly during day and at night she has a bottle at 9pm then 12am and then 6am...works out 6 feeds a day which is one more than what the tin says!

I would personally go with demand feeding rather than what the tin says!

I agree with gorge. Those guidelines on the side of the tin are just there to irritate you at 5 in the morning when you are up for the second or third time.

Ds3 struggled to take the recomended amount and was 8lb5 born but dropped his 3am feed quickly.
Ds1 was way over what he should have been taking and fed every 2-3 hours for 3 months and was 7lb2 born.

As long as she is putting on weight and drinking near to to what the hv recommends I wouldn't worry.

their milk intake differs so much i dont know how they can justify putting these 'guidelines' on the tin/pot as i said dd has been having roughly 5-6 feeds a day 3-4 hourly but yesterday during the day she was 2hourly...hungry day i think.

also she is draining her bottles so gonna have to up to 6oz and according to tin she should still be on 5oz...

I would never follow the tin i believe in demand feeding til they r weaning.
