Is follow on milk only to be used if your lo is on solids?

I am considering stopping bf but DS is 5mths 1week. Do I get the first milk type or go straight to follow on as hes nearly 6 mths. He hasnt started weaning yet so bit confused.

Was thinking of follow on milk as its often a lot cheaper, bit bad of me but formula is so expensive.

Follow on milk is for after 6 months and so meant to compliment a food diet, it wouldn't be quite as satisfying or filling as the first milk so if that is all your baby is taking they may not be satisfied with just the milk, if you start that milk as you start wearning though it'll probably be fine!

Follow-on is a scam that exists only because of the milk marketing laws in the UK. It has added iron in it, which can cause really bad constipation.

I don't think it's less satisfying than normal formula - the only difference is the added iron, and the scam.

Given it's cheaper, you can give it a go, but if your baby gets constipation, go to normal formula.

this thread covers it, too.
