Any tips about how long to use Gavescon for?

5 month old DD has been on Gavescon infant since 3 weeks old for reflux. Got her weighed by practice nurse yesterday and got bollocked for DD still being on Gav. Did 2 feeds yesterday without it and vast oceans of puke plus upset crying baby later mean I've put the Gav back in the bottles today. GP just says 'sure, whatever you think yourself' (GRRRR NOT helpful). Also wary as nurse said re: Gav that babies grow out of colic by 5 months anyway (WTF?! I did say Do you mean reflux? but she ignored me). So just wondering if anyone has any general guidance on how long to keep using Gav for. Not going to wean till 6 months, but what happens then? Also, do you need to wean them off eg use half a sachet etc. DD's still struggling to take 6 oz bottle - been taking same amount of feed since early Sept at 3 months old, though is slowly gaining weight. I only use one sachet in each bottle(5 feeds per day; pack says max 6 doses per day) and this seems to work ok. Any advice appreciated. And it's a 'country' practice in every sense of the word so no other partners available for 2nd opinion.... Thanks in advance....

well i would listen to the dr,, if you think its helping keep baby on it, you could try to get baby off it by half doses instead of full ones gradually see if that helps if not keep baby on it till you ween baby.
Have you tried different kinds of baby milk maybe baby just doesnt get on with this particualar one. maybe different type of bottle so baby doesnt take in so much air, not sure what you have tried.

What on earth? I think you should make a complaint about the nurse. Babies can grow out of reflux as they start solids but it's not guaranteed. And if you're using one sachet you're giving her a smaller dose than you're allowed to at her age...

Reflux is horrid, and painful. I'd carry on. Don't rock the apple cart at this stage, with only a month to go until solids start anyway...

Thanks Rach & LTJ - thought nurse was [unprintable] but then panicked in case I had missed something hence the post. Yesterday was complete nightmare as non Gav feeds of the previous day seemed to have left her utterly convinced I was trying to kill her with the bottle & she was refusing bottle outright after one ounce! Fortunately, today seems to be better....(touches reformed wood product quickly) On Dr Brown's bottles anyway (since 6 weeks old)and on Aptimil which has always been fine - did briefly try the easy digest stuff but the 'big' teat I bought that it would fit through just choked her as too much came out in one go. Roll on the baby rice!
