Stopped domperidone, supply plummeted. Will it come back?

DD is now 7.5 months and I've been on domperidone since 2 months. I was never sure how much difference it made so last week halved the dose and seemed ok. However i finished them totally 3 days ago and by yesterday had supply problems and pretty much no milk this morning (very obvious to both me and DD). I was rather emotional this morning as was trying to decide if i should stop bf now if I am still dependent on pills (DD is ff while at childminder and one bottle a day with me since 6 months so no great hardship to her).

However have decided to try to carry on a bit longer through the winter and GP has given me a new prescription. Given that I have had very little milk for 2 days, should it come back fairly quickly?

To those of you who are on it, have many needed to carry on this long?

thanks

Your supply will return soon, within 4 hours in my experience.

I have been on it now since baby was 4 months - he is now 6 months old.

If you want to try and find your optimum level drop one pill every 2/3 days. I am on 4 x 3 per day, but I have dropped the last dose to 3 pills only as baby sleeps a lot at night now, thank God, so I was fit to burst!

It's very benign as a drug, so I will be continuing for hopefully another 6 months as I'd really like to make the year and as you say, certainly the winter and teething.

All the best.

Thanks cfc - i do hope so. Poor DD is very confused and quickly losing interest which of course isnt going to help stimulate supply. I am so suprised that my milk disappeared so abruptly - its incredible. Just have to hope it comes back quickly as I dont think I will be able to keep DD feeding for long at this rate.

I was on 4 x 2 a day but seemed ok on half that last week, which is why it was such a shock when milk disappeared overnight 2 days after stopping. Seems too much of a coincidence to be anything else...

hoping there will be an improvement by morning. fingers crossed

Hoping for you. My supply drops happened as I went from 120-110, then when I went from 80-70, and then when I went from 40-30. Other drops had little or no effect. I dropped 1 a week.

No improvement yet :-( DD downed a bottle of formula after bf first thing this morning. How long should I give it to return (assuming that is that stopping the domperidone was the reason for this)before giving up?
Have so far had 80mg since yesterday early afternoon,
feeling very sad :-(

Does supply ever stop just like that for any other reason?

Eek! I meant 4 days! Not 4 hours, that would be too good.

Just keep on taking the upped number of pills and in the meantime express perhaps, if you can. That'll help.

Just persevere, it'll all come right. I promise. The pills are great.

jasperc163 · 13/11/2009 11:26

thanks cfc. nothing coming out - trying to express as well but nothing. Cant believe i have gone from an engorged breast every morning (only one worked well!) to nothing in 3 days. Someone tell me how this can happen?

Just worried supply wont come back if not stimulated sufficiently - expressing not enough for me - and DD can't be bothered - can't blame her.

Can anyone tell me what else can cause supply to pretty much stop? I am starting to wonder if the domperidone alone could have made this much difference?

thanks

supply can stop if you are pregnant again?

i was on motilium for about 6 months, a dose of 2 pills a day seemed to be doing the job once i moved to 2 feeds a day. needed 3 before.

it used to kick in pretty much straight 1.5-2hours after the pill, so i'd take one in the evening and wake up for a night feeding pretty full. if i forgot a pill would be empty. if i dropped for a couple days would have been very empty but think supply comes back pretty quickly unless you stop completely.

maybe try expressing a bit if baby is losing interest but you want to carry on?

never reasised GPs in this country could prescribe it. mine said because it was a side effect of the drug not the main intention she would not prescribe, like it was not approved for use for lactation. so i had to cheat my chemist every time (like i am having bad stomach etc.)

resorted to importing from a more relaxed country at the end. they sell loads in russia and asia much cheaper than here.

jasperc163 · 15/11/2009 18:01

Suslik - you have scared the living daylights out of me!!! Very much hope not!

yes my GP is prescribing 200 tabs at a time.

My milk has returned a bit (prob at 50% atm)and am 3 days in so going to try for a few more days and keep fingers crossed.

Hello , a bit of a long shot as this was obviously years ago but can any of you lend some advise? I’ve been taking dom for 10 weeks started on 1 x 3 a day . That didn’t do anything moved over to 2 x 3 a day that slightly improved things finally 3 x 3 a day and that helped so much . I’ve been doing that for a month now but suddenly my supply has dropped to nothing and cannot get let downs as well. My baby is 7 months and refuses a bottle. I changed to 2 x 4 a day yesterday but wondering if I should rather do 4 x 3 a day? Really hoping someone can help. Thank you
