Anyone recommend a good nipple cream/ointment?

Can anyone recommend a really good nipple cream/ointment/moisturiser. I am about to have my second baby and am worried about getting very sore nipples - first time round I used nipple shields so never got sore nipples - this time round I don't want to be so reliant upon using nipple shields. I want to arm myself with a good ointment to get me through the tough times! Would appreciate all suggestions! Thanks!

Yep, lansinoh all the way, it's the best, about £10 a tube but lasts ages and totally worth it.

lansinoh lansinoh lansinoh....I could never have succeeded breastfeeding without it. every feed I was slapping it on afterwards and never once had a sore/cracked nipple. Miracle cream!

You can ask GP to prescribe it too

Do we know who invented lasinoh? Do they have a knighthood? They should.

My dear friend (the same one who gave me her breast pump) saved my breastfeeding by giving me a tube of lasinoh. I nearly gave up at 3 weeks - I mean really nearly gave up, as in sobbing to DH to go to Boots and buy bottles, teats and formula, now.

In fact my friend should have a knighthood.

raloha - lansinoh is great but if your baby is positioned properly, you shouldn't get sore nipples in the first place. Make sure you get that right from the off.

Sorry mears I know you mean to be helpful but I think that's bollocks. DS was perfectly positioned and latched and mine were incredibly sore at first. It stands to reason that any bit of your body that is used to hardly being touched (well apart from sex obviously) suddenly has a hungry little mouth attached to it for 40 + minutes 8+ times per day is going to be sore.

Sorry to sound ignorant here, but I've never heard of lansinoh. I was told to just express a drop of milk after each time & rub over the nipple. I did this & never had any soreness or cracks in almost a year of bf. Do people do this?

Yes tearinghair I did that. Lansinoh is good though because you can really get loads on and it just feels better if you have sore nipples to be able to slather them with cream Milk is all well and good but a couple of drops of it doesn't have the same slatherability And getting more involves expressing which you really don't want to do unless you have to, if your nipples are sore.

Georgimama - tisn't bollocks and certainly can be done. I pewrsonally had sore nipples for first 2 babies but I know I let them faff around a bit when latching on and thought 'that will do' when they were on. A baby latched on properly should not damage the nipple which causes the pain.

Propbel comes when the nipple is not far enough back in the mouth and gets compressed against the palate - hence pain.

Paid a lot more attention with next 2 babes and not a problem.

As a midwife I see women feeding with no pain. Can be done.

tearinghairout - yes breastmilk can be used on nipples still. The only thing is that dry healing is not as good as moist healing. Think about chapped lips. They heal better with lip salve on rather than being left exposed. Lansinoh does same thing.

I didn't say BFing cannot be done without any pain, but it is not true to say that if you are correctly positioned your nipples will not get sore. My son was correctly positioned, my nipples were sore.

OK bertie, yes, I see about the slatherability (good word!). I remember people recommending creams & being worried about the baby sucking it. Must be OK for them? (prob has added vitamins!)

Yep Lansinoh is fine for babies to ingest. It doesn't have added vitamins though. It does say this on the packaging somewhere I think... I only ever had small sample sachets of it which the midwife brought.

Lansinoh has good results. 100% pure lanolin - so not suitable if you're allergic! Some mums find lathering it on helpful and more soothing but to be honest doesn't work any better and you should wipe off excess (though not harmful to baby).

If you have been shown correct massage and hand-expressing technique then it should not be painful to express a few drops of breastmilk as you would not be squeezing the nipple. Your own milk has anti-bodies to aid healing and feels cool and soothing when applied to the nipple.

Correct attachment should help prevent further damage and speed up recovery, though can still be tender whilst healing taking place. You should ask for home visit from local NCT or other BF counsellor to observe baby latching on and give you guidance

You know I am not so convinced about babies being positioned properly but still having sore nipples. I thought ny first 2 were on properly, but with my experience and what I have learned since then, they were not.

The nipple does not grow an extra later - positioning gets better then pain stops.

It is amazing what a difference a couple of centemetres can make to improve a baby's position.

Green Baby's Nipple Balm, as it contains no lanolin it's veggie too.

Earth Mama Angel Baby Nipple Butter (all natural and edible, got mine from amazon) and rubbing on some breastmilk after feeding.

Still BFing exclusively, no sore nipples apart from a few milk blisters to start with. I was told I could have avoided these if I had 'prepared' my nipples by scrubbing them a bit in the shower while pregnant (nipple SAS training presumably). 12 weeks in which is not bad considering I only managed 12 days last time.
