Why does my 2 week old fuss and push away at the breast in the evening?

There def seems to be a pattern forming in the evenings.

I latch her on and within a few seconds she's pulling her head away and pushing with her hands.

Is this normal?

Having a massive crisis of confidence

I've been feeding DD on and off since 11am. I think she's finally settling for a sleep.

I'm taking fenugreek and have let her nurse as much as she's wanted.

Tiktok, if you're still around... If your baby was a large birth weight, can it take a bit longer to get your milk supply up sufficiently to satisfy?

Don't have a crisis of confidence Heinz, it will be fine- I promise .

I am on fenugreek too- 9 a day. How many are you taking? I stink though .

HeinzSight · 02/09/2009 16:34

it's soooo hard suwoo. I'm determined to keep at it, I'm just so worried she's not thriving

So far I've taken 6 fenugreek. Do you smell of maple syrup?

I'm off to supermarket in a minute, am going to get Oatibix and fruit and barley squash, apparently they're good for boosting supply.

Also, my diet's not been brilliant, I've jsut been grabbing whatever I can find, which hasn't been v healthy. Am going to stock up on fruit and veg!

I haven't yet seen a lactation expert. I need to get that organised next week.

Am glad we're keeping in touch, it makes SUCH a difference thank you x

It does get easier, its true what they say. Its horrible when you are worried they're not thriving, DS is still 10 oz off his birthweight and he is 5 wks tomorrow.

I have been on 9 fenugreek since he was born, the maple syrup bit isn't true- you smell like curry!

My lactation consultant has been brilliant but has said nothing different to tiktok.

I am going to baby bistro on Friday, do you have one nearby?

Have you seen the Jack Newman videos showing good latch and good sucking? I found them very helpful.

Hi there

I haven't read through all of the above so forgive if someone has said this already -

My midwife advised me (same thing happened to me) that it could be that the milk flow was too fast. She suggested sitting leaning right back so baby is almost above (sort of sucking upwards) for a few days and see if this helps.

I've also read that you can let them start sucking and then take them off the breast for a few seconds and let the rushing bit (if this is happening) of the milk into a cloth and then put them back on.

My midwife also said that mustard yellow poop is good but that a more pesto coloured poop suggests that they are only getting the fore milk and not enough hind milk. When I went to an NHS breastfeeding workshop they advised us to only ever offer one breast per feed and to offer the same breast if the baby wanted to feed again within the hour. However, I notice that on the NHS website they suggest offering both breasts at every feed.

So much conflicting info!

Best of luck.
