Mega fast letdown making dd v windy

She's only 8 days old.. I'm guessing it will calm down? Is there anything I can do in the meantime? Any magic ways of winding her?

Aww congratulations I used to do the "Tiger in the Tree" baby yoga position (not as poncy as it sounds!) which is hard to explain... I have just tried and failed to find a picture online as well, sorry. Basically you lie the baby along your forearm so that their arms and legs hang down the sides, your fingers cup around their nappy between their legs (the heel of your hand should be right on their tummy) and their head is facing the inside of your elbow.

You can then either rub their back with your other hand or use it for additional support to hold them and just rock gently.

It will calm down - had the same with DS1 and DS2. In the meantime, try - delatching when you have let down and putting a muslin over your boob until the flow has slowed down then putting baby back on (worked best with DS1)- burp mid feed - try biological nursing (you can google it) - try feeding baby in a slightly more upright position and leaning back (this worked best with DS2) - try block feeding (several feeds from one side then several from the other)

As they get bigger they get better at dealing with the flow.

Try massaging your breast and hand-expressing for a couple of minutes before you put your DD to the breast for a feed. The massage will initiate your milk flow and the hand-expressing will take off the excess initial fast-flowing foremilk. Don't worry, though - your baby will still get enough foremilk as it's the way she suckles (should start feed gulping) that gets first the foremilk and then (slows down gulps to longer, more drawn-out sucks with short pauses) to the hindmilk.

Good methods for feeding and winding from dinkystinky and BertieBotts. Do wind regularly - before , during (straight after gulps, just as baby slows her suck) and after the feed. Another good way to wind is lay baby on her tummy across your lap and gently pat her back. Then sit her up in traditional winding position and wind some more. Alternate between the 2 methods to move the trapped wind to the 'top' - helps baby to get rid of it more easily. Good luck

Thanks all. I'm now worried that it's the start of colic, as last night she was inconsolable for about 3 hours... tried winding but to no avail.

Bertie I know what you mean by the tiger hold - she seems to like that one. She also loves the sling.

DS2 was a bit colicky/refluxy - took him to a cranial osteopath and it really helped tonnes within a few weeks. May be worth a go Picante. Another thing that helped settle DS2 was massage and warm bath in the colic hours... Hope it all settles down soon for you.
