Medela Swing advice please

I'm having pain from my right boob / nipple, so have started to express til it feels better. I have Avent hand pump which is sometimes OK & other times makes my boob / nipple sore. So I went to buy an electric pump this afternoon & opted for a Medela Swing.

I've got it home & the leaflet says to wash everything & then boil in a saucepan for 5 minutes once a day and to wash and air dry after every use.

Does this mean I can't sterilise it my microwave steriliser?

Does it only need sterilising once a day & not after every use?

I've not taken it out of the packaging yet, & I'm tempted to take it back & ask for a refund if I can't use the microwave steriliser, even though I've broken the 'can not be returned seal'.

Mine also said no microwave sterilising , but , I'm sure you can buy medela bags to sterilise it in

I use milton and do it after every use, but I only use mine once a day. I think the instructions cover other countries where they have different guidelines re sterilising

One thing to watch with the swing is that the soft funnel part can become slightly distorted and I used to have to rotate mine each day as started to get slightly blocked ducts.

It is a very good breast pump though. I love mine.

have you got a dishwasher? I don't sterilise mine at all, just wash it in hot soapy water after each use and leave it to air dry on some clean kitchen paper to air dry. Then it goes in the dishwasher at the end of the day. dishwashers get hot enough to kill any bugs on there.
Nowadays the advice on sterilising is changeing and they are saying you only need to sterilise bottles for prem babies or babies with immune problems. A good hot wash is good enough.
I would highly reccomend the Swing pump as it is not at all painful and it gets lots of milk out.

I did mine in a steam steriliser. I would stick it in, it will probably be fine.

I've got a Medela on loan from the hospital. They instructed me to wash the bottles and funnels in hot water after each use and put through the dishwasher once a day.

There is a seperate green sheet with extra instructions which says 'to disinfect, boil in water for 5 minutes or dishwasher/steam/microwave/cold water sterilise'.

I don't think you can microwave the tube or connector though, so they'll still need boiling . . . . hmmm

Used the Avent hand earlier & didn't get much out & a little pain, then tried to baby on & managed a few minutes before too painful, so fingers crossed.

Any other tips gratefully received.

quick check, can i boil the tube and the connector (the bit the tube goes into)?

You only need to clean the vacuum tube if milk gets in there as far as I remember. Dont think I ever sterilised my tube. Loved my Medela Swing, also had Avent hand pump first and found it worse then useless.

Has anyone tried the symphony and the swing? Just wondered cos I have the symphony on hire and not having much success with it.

I bought a Swing and had the same question! So rang Medela and they said you can sterilize everything except the tube to the pump, i.e the bottle, connector, valve and funnel. I've been using a microwave steam sterilizer and it's fine. The tube gets rinsed and air dried now and then.
