Possible blocked duct?

Hi
For about three hours I have had a really painful (to touch) right breast. I am wondering if this could be a blocked duct as I am still feeding ds. If so what do you do about it???
Thanks.

Is it painful everywhere or just one area ? Is it red too?
If so, try putting a warm flanel (or hot shower) on the area and get baby to feed from that breast or express right after that. Massage will help too.

If you're blocked, it's likely to have a red patch at the most painful bit. You might have a white spot on your nipple too. a hot bath and a bit of a squeeze in the right place might just pop off the spot and free up the duct. If you are blocked then it'll probably squirt everywhere! Just keep feeding a little more often and massaging while you feed.

Thanks. I don't have a red patch or any marks but it is definitely painful and I feel like I have flu so maybe this is mastitis? Is the advice the same?

Ouch !

Hot and cold water/flannels eventually worked for me but it took a few days of standing in the shower massaging and feeding (not in shower!) as often as poss. to really clear it.

I also had one of those sports cool packs from Boots which you could also heat in hot water.

If you start to feel really unwell best to see dr as could be mastitis and may need antibiotics.

Sounds like a blocked duct to me, the redness may develop over the next few hours! Try massaging the area with warm oil, then use a comb (preferably one with blunt teeth) to massage the breast, downwards towards the nipple only. Feed your baby or express immediately afterwards to get the milk flowing again.

See am I getting enough milk thread as I had graet advice for my blocked duct and am now recovering!

good luck - nasty pain isn't it!

arrabella2, it's horrible isn't it? At the risk of repeating myself I have found a savoy cabbage leaf straight out the fridge and popped into my bra a big help (cut the stalk bit out it'll be more comfortable). If you have flu like symptoms it sounds like the start of mastitis, in my experience (had this with DS1 and 2) if you can get the milk flowing you can avoid the need for antibiotics.

All the best.

Thanks everybody. Ds fed a lot off the painful breast last night and in the night (still fed at night - another story!) and this morning it is MUCH better and the flu symptoms have gone. I did take one Ibuprofen tablet which helped.
