Avent or Tommee Tippee?

Hi, I am 31 weeks pregnant with my first child and am hoping to breastfeed, but know that just in case things dont work out like I hope, I also need to have some bottles bought for when the babies born.

I wanted to know which bottle brand you would recommend, Avent or Tommee Tippee? Or are there other brands out there that I havent even considered?

To be honest, having bottles and formula in the house is one of the least helpful things you can do if you are hoping to BF.

They are easily available in the event you decide you need them, but really, I wouldn't buy them 'just in case'.

Far better to make sure you have the numbers for BF advice in your phonebook, the full support of your partner, and a lot of chocolate

I really like TT. I expressed a lot and found the tiny bottles really good.

I agree with AA, but when its 2am and the baby is screaming, you're shattered and for whatever reason, BF isn't happening it is useful to have another option. You don't have to give formula.....you could build up a supply of expressed milk to give. Despite what everyone says, I expressed from Day 1 in hospital and it all worked out fine, didn't affect DD's ability to BF at all. FWIW, I found Tommy Tippee Closer to Nature bottles the best. Good luck!

honestly, the shops don't close just because you've had a baby. it's one of the greatest marketing myths, that you have to be 'ready'. you don't. that's what you have friends and lovers and mothers and fathers for, to rush out to the supermarket.

in the event, though, then tommee tippee are now doing non-pcb (is it pcb? something like that) as standard, which is good. basically they're not leaching chemicals into the formula any more.

(and if that doesn't encourage you to bf, what will?)

agree TOTALLY about knowing the name of local BFC etc etc in advance, and making sure that your partner is on board. it can be tough goinig those first few weeks, but as someone who bf exc for a while but never quite cracked it, the difference between going out armed with bottles and powder containers and thermal bags etc and going out armed with your tits is enormous. lord i wish i could do that again...

Unless you want to express milk, you don't need bottles at all. It can be useful to have one or two with a pump in case you need to express in the early weeks but other than that, better to buy them when you need them.

I really think all bottles are much of a muchness and it's what your baby prefers/which ones are cheaper/what is on offer.

BPA free.

I had almost nothing ready for DD, and was only slightly better organized with DS. There are so many pregnant mums in Mothercare in panic mode and buying so much stuff!

But Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature are good. Got their BPA free ones and they are cloudy. Apparently the reason bottles are clear is due to BPA.

OP - I did the same, wanted to BF but bought some supplies just incase. I also found the TT Closer to Nature ones are the best but we had to switch to Dr Browns for s time as he had alot of wind and these seemed to help for a while. We're back on the TT ones now.

thanks all. Buying the bottles beforehand was with a view to express, not turn to formula.

Plus babys are us have a good offer on at the moment for sets of bottles plus a steraliser (sp?) . I was veering towards the TT because of the BFA free thing, but everyone i know that has kids use avent...

I prefer the MAM ones - BPA free and the teats are more like boobs than any other, IMHO.

They're the only ones my bfed baby would take.

in boots there is half price offer on the electric steam sterilizer it comeswith a selection of bottles for £20 (tommee tippee)

I use TT ones, but I am not getting on at all with the TT breast pump. I've just ordered a Medela swing Breast pump off ebay so waiting for it to come.

TT closer to nature ones were great for us. I did find the pump a bit non-effective but I never tried another one.

The Medela swing pump is fab! I borrowed one from a lady I met at a friends wedding (long story) and I never looked back.
