Is it colic? Allergic to formula?

Hi I am a first time mum and i have a little boy who is 3 weeks and 4 days old.

He is a very windy baby so he is on infacol, he was in scbu when he was born due to a punctured lung.
He keeps crying before and after a bottle and sometimes just throughout the day, he keeps bringing his milk back up and every time i try and wind him he crys but when you put the bottle back in he is ok.

He is also really wheezy, he is always wheezing.

He finds it hard to sleep and settle.

Has anyone got any advice.

What has his weight and development been like?

Is the wheezing a health issue, do you think? Some babies have 'stridor' which is a 'floppy larynx' and they grow out of it, and there are no ill effects; in other cases wheezing is a sign of a health problem. What have you been told?

Is he ok as long as he is cuddled and snuggled into you? Or is he unsettled even then?

Is going back to breastfeeding an option for you?

I have got the health visitor today for the 2nd time so i have got to tell her all of this.
He seems to be getting bigger but im sure she will weigh him today, he was 8lb 5oz when he was born so quite a good weight.

i can feel the wheeziness in the top part of his back but im not sure if its a health issue.

he still crys alot when he is cuddled, he always seems to be hungry aswell.

I never tryed breastfeeding.

It's good the HV is coming, roxy....I'd agree she needs to know all this, and she should be able to assess if you need medical advice (she won't be able to diagnose allergy or intolerance). She might weigh him, too, which will add more info to the picture.

Is breastfeeding something you would like to try now? It's not an easy option to start from scratch a few weeks in, but most women still have some milk even at this stage, and with support and good info they can build up a supply. It sounds like it could be reflux to me. My son had it terribly and it burns their little throats as the milk is coming up. That could be why he stops when you feed him again, as the milk is soothing. Talk to your GP and if that's what they think it is, he / she can prescribe a baby friendly antacid-type medication which you can add to the bottle. This helps to neutralise the acid so it doesn't cause discomfort. The reflux can also produce a wheezing sound as the milk is kind of "lurking around" in their throats. (if that makes sense!)

It's always tough when you're a new mum! I remember feeling so helpless sometimes and wondering if I was doing the right thing. Just remember that you know your son better than anyone else and that if you are concerned about anything, you must ask questions until you feel satisfied. Don't let anyone brush you off.

As for the windiness......my daughter had colic and all I can say is that, as rough as it seems sometimes, it does pass, promise! And I am still sane (relatively)

He has got reflux, they have given him baby gaviscon to put in his milk and already he seems so much happier.
