anyone suffered with Thrush whilst BF?

I posted this thread earlier today here as I had been suffering from severe stabbing pains in my breasts after feeding

I have since spoken to my HV who thinks i have probably got thrush. She is going to prescribe cream for my nipples and some oral drops to treat DD's mouth.
She told me on the phone that is it quite hard to treat.
I would like to know from anyone else that has had it, how they found the treatment, did it work, did they need anibiotics, did they give up BF as a result?
I am feeling pretty low about it at the moment .

Hi, just wanted to say I've been there too and it's awful so you have my sympathy. Fluconazole in big doses ( as suggested by BFN leaflet) finally shifted it for me. I had it from 3 weeks until ds was about 8 or 9 weeks, and I managed to keep bf and only stopped at 16 mths. Have you BF counsellors or anyone near by? I only ask because as well as taking the fluconazole, and doing everything else suggested, I went to the bf clinic at my hospital and the counsellor was v. supportive and helped me to find a less painful position to feed. My ds was latching ok, but actually due to the thrush pain, his latch needed to be much better so that I could cope. Wishing you all the best - I hope it clears soon. Hang in there, you are doing very well to keep going through it.

I started taking the fluconazole on friday (a dose of 200mg then a dose of 100mg every day).
It seemed okish over the weekend, but today the pain is unbearable. I was hoping it might be starting to get better as i have read on some posts that it starts to work after 3 days.
I have also got Daktarin gel for DD's mouth. Haven't eaten any sugar or bread since friday.
feel like crying...in fact I feel like giving up BF right now.

Oh your poor woman Thrush on boobs is awful. Daktarin for baby mouth AND your nipples. Hot wash everything your breasts have touched, change bra daily, i see you have fluc already (this cleared mine after everything else). I found nystatin useless.

Grit your teeth, keep going, you can do it

Also google Gentian Violet.

Hi Plantwoman, I replied on your other thread but as someone who was mis diagnosed with thrush for months and nearly gave up bfing because of it let me know if you have any of the symptoms of this www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mom/nipple-blanching.html

I have Raynauds as well and ended up with medication for 2 weeks which has pretty much got it under control but if I get cold it is absolutely agonising and the pain is stabbing, not just isolated to the nipple.

If it sounds likely let me know and I can give you lots of info on how to control it.

plantwoman · 15/06/2009 13:36

hi - i don't have any of those symptoms, but thank you.
I just don't know what to do, i am dreading her next feed

Any chance you could talk to the GP re doubling the fluconazole? I had a week on a 100mg dose which didn't help, and it was only when I took the maximum dosage that it improved. Can you get a bf counsellor from BFN or La Leche, or NCT to come and see you feed? They may be able to help you get more comfortable. Hope the next feed isn't too dreadful.
