Distracted during breastfeed and bobbing off and on

My 14wk old boy is becoming distracted while feeding - looking around, playing with my clothes, smiling at me (!), etc. he also repeatedly unlatches himself but instantly tries to put himself back on (altho i have to help otherwise he won't latch on fully). very frustrating and feeding taking longer than should. any suggestions? thanks

I'd call off the feed for 5 and start again and do this until he is ready to feed without being all gorgeous and rascally.

Have you tried feeding in a very boring place? Darkish room and nothing interesting to look at. You could also try doing feeds just before or after naps when he's sleepy and more likely to focus. He's at the age now where the world around him is getting really interesting and he wants to know what's going on around him.

Similar here with 14 week old - I encourage her to get back and if it doesn't work I wind her; if that doesn't work I swop to other boob and that seems to work...distraction deffo seems to be part of the prob tho and I think my lo is feeding endlessly more at night cos its more boring then.

Some women find using a nursing necklace helps....any clunky, colourful necklace that you wear that he can mess with while at the breast. Or perhaps a small cuddly toy that he holds onto only during feeds.

thank you - good idea. he is still doing it, unless i sit in the dark!!! but then he nearly falls asleep! will try the necklce too.

great tips, I also have a 15 week old doing the same thing. I sometimes find it's wind but often she does it for what seems like nothing. Might try the necklace idea!

I used a poncho with DS2, evil mother that I am. Either that or upstairs to bed.
