Hi can someone remind me of the treatment for breast thrush, I had it with dd and now seem to be getting it ds is only 8 days old, the shooting pains are only mild at the moment. Last time i took fluconazole which worked and ds had an orange gel, is there anyhing i can try before having fluconazole or is it best to go straight for the hard stuff? I am currently taking erithromycin and metronidazole for infected stitches will i have to wait until i have finished the antibiotics?

Hi hun. When I had breast thrush I was told by midwife to use canestan cream on nipple area. Never needed to take it internally, and as long as you wipe yourself before the next feed, it's safe for junior too. The shooting pains may be a crack though. You might want to get a tube of Lansinoh gel. Marvellous stuff.

If you catch it early enough you can just use cream - either canasten (also known as clotrimazole which is it's generic name and much cheaper if you are buying the stuff)

You will also need to get ds treated so you are not passing it back and for, your hv should be able to write you both a prescription - he should either get nystatin which is a yellow liquid or I think it's Daktarin that do a mouth gel or whatever the generic equivalent is.

The anti biotics are maybe not helping either - not sure if you can take some acidopholus, friendly type bacteria - worth a shot.

Hope it gets better soon.

Sorry, just to clarify, I meant the antibiotics will not be helping with the thrush by killing off your natural skin flora (love that expession )and letting the thrush get a foothold - wasn't suggesting that you stop taking them!

Have seen other people talk about wiping with vinegar and I think grapefruit seed extract is the other thing that has worked for people (not sure what you are meant to do with it though)- if you search the archives something will come up.
