Variflow/Easy Digest/Reflux - Please HELP!

Hi all

DD (6 weeks) has been diagnosed with quite severe reflux. As a starting point we are using infant gaviscon mixed with C&G Comfort. Through a 3+ month teat DD couldnt get any milk out. We have switched to variflow under GPs advise and tried on the first setting. Problem is it seems much too fast for her and she is spilling almost all of it out. I am at my wits end and now dont know if reflux is being dealt with as she is so hungry because she is not getting enough milk and this may be why she is so upset rather than the reflux.

I will go back to GP on monday but any advice before then would be very very helpful as feel I am going slightly bonkers. Didnt want to FF, but due to complicated birth and op afterwards had to and now feel that I'm causing her more and more upset!

Please help!

You could try using a normal sized teat for her (what ever she was comfortable with before) and mixing the gaviscon up in a seperate bottle as the packet suggests for a bfed baby.

My DD1 had quite bad reflux and as she was bfed I couldn't add to her bottles of milk so I used a narrow neck bottle neck and teat and added that to a breast pump bottle (I liberated some from hospital that had been calibrated in 5ml increments) and mixed the sachet with cooled boiled water.

Unfortunately IG didn't suit my dd1 so we went down the Domperidone/Motilium route which really worked for her. This works by speeding up the transit of milk through the gut so it's not sitting in the stomach for too long ergo less time for baby to be sick.

I assume the Drs have given you all the usual advice regarding keeping baby upright after a feed, gentle winding mid-feed, not changing baby's nappy just after a feed, etc?

Good luck and remember you can always take Baby to paediatric walk-in clinic/a&e if you feel she's getting worse.

my DS was prescribed Infant gavison as he is BF i used a syringe to give him gavison before a feed. It did make him very constipated so beware. He currently takes ranitidine which stops the projectile vomiting but he still continues to bring up milk (5 months old now).
I have raised the head of DS cot by about a foot, as lying flat he sometimes starts to make choking sounds when sleeping which panics me and makes him scream. may be worth a try for your DD.
all i can recommended is trying more teats to find one that suits yr DD, good luck and get back to your dr.
