fluids for a bf baby onto solids?

Hi there,

Hope someone can help me with my confusion, hv is a bit rubbish and impossible to get hold of over the phone, and I can't get to her drop in sessions.

My dd is 8.5 months, exclusively bf, has been onto solids since 6 months. The only fluids she gets apart from in her food are from me. Should she be drinking water or juice as well?

She would never take a bottle, but occasionally takes ebm from a tommy tippee sippy cup, so she does know how to drink. She doesn't seem to be constipated or dehydrated. Some days she wants to feed lots, but seems to be more for comfort, when she's tired or teething or not well in general.

Just wondered if I should be giving her anything else to drink as well as her feeds. The baby food books I have say give water or juice with meals, but I've just been assuming that they're aimed at mothers of ff babies. I have something in my head that says babies shouldn't need any drink other than bm for first year, but don't know where that came from, or if it's right.

Do have a 6 yr old ds, so should know, but to be honest when he was this age I was working full time, had pnd and mil looked after him all day. Plus, I just really can't remember - wasn't planning having another, so didn't pay a huge amount of attention or make an effort to remember stuff I didn't think would be important for the future.

Thanks in advance

i always had water available once ds started solids, he just played with it at first but then he really started to like it. it won't affect how much bm he takes. avoid juice as long as you can!

Start offering water with meals in a sippy cup, but don't worry about intake. My DS would take no more than about 10-20ml (I got really anal about measuring it as he took so little!) until he was about 10-11 months old when he dropped down to 2 bf per day. At 13mo he now has no bf, one cup of milk and several cups of water per day.

I think the main thing is to get her used to drinking water now so that when she does need it later as she cuts back on bf, or if you decide to stop, she is used to taking her fluid needs from a cup. But she will actually be getting enough fluid from her bfs for now.
