our baby arrived on tuesday morning, i feel that my milk supply hasn't come in yet. is this normal? he is going to breast and sucking, not sure if he's getting enough, one or two dirty nappies no real wet ones though and has lost a bit of weight? at birth 8lb 5.5oz today 7lb 12oz.
any advice would be appreciated

Congratulations on your little one! Sounds normal to me - I'm sure my milk didn't come in for 3 or 4 days. That's great if he is taking the breast - well done!

With the weight thing, I think it's normal for them to loose up to 10% of their birth weight by the time they are 10 days old.

my milk came in on day three with the first one and day 4 (woke up with boobs like waatermelons) with the second one. i think give it at least another day before you are worried. that weight loss sounds ok to me but am no expert. are you feeding him often?

Hi, congrats! With both my kids my milk didnt come in til the 4th or 5th day so dont worry if you don't think it's in yet. Its normal for them to loose weight the 1st few days, if he isnt upset all the time and seems happy after a feed them im sure he's fine. What I did with each of mine was use a few ounces of formula for the first week if they still seemed hungry after a feed. I think most midwives advise against that cause they say it can affect the milk supply but it didnt affect mine any. Hope this helps.

Same here - milk didn't come in til about day 4 or 5 with all mine.
Enjoy!

Put a paper napkin in his nappy to check for wetness. In the first few days, think "rule of age". Roughly the number of wet nappies will be how old he is, along with some soiled ones....are they still dark and sticky?

If you are concerned with his latch, consider having it checked. If you still don't feel there has been a transition in milk by day 5, and you don't notice an increase in wet nappies and/or bms have not started to change from meconium, definitely have latch checked.

Day 3 with Ds (couldn't believe my eyes! huge breasts!), but with Dd my milk was there when she arrived! very strange! she was a week late, I don't know if that makes a difference...neither of mine lost weight after birth, but I hear most babies do lose weight in the first week.

It doesn't sound like you have a problem yet, but you could speak to your MW for reassurance Congratulations by the way! sons are wonderful.

Congrats KP , maybe try some skin on skin breastfeeding put a towel on your lap and leave his nappy off? I did this with my then 3 day old ds because we were worried and he did a huge wee all over my clean PJ bottoms . Kellymom is very useful if you have time for a read kellymom enough milk?

katiepotatie · 08/05/2009 05:09

he has not had a drty nappy today either, was meconium yesterday though. will check out kellymom, seeing midwife tomorrow
