Getting pregnant whilst breastfeeding??

BunnyLebowski · 07/05/2009 13:14

I'm breastfeeding dd (7 months) and consequently haven't had a period since she was conceived.

DP and I are thinking of trying for another baby so I'm wondering if anyone can tell me do I have to wait till I've finished bfing dd to do this?

Can I get pregnant whilst breastfeeding?

(I know nowt about Biology needless to say!)

You don't have to wait - you can become pregnant if that's what you want! I know several friends who have become pregnant again while still BFing.
As for whether you will be able to, that depends on your body I think - half of the friends I know who got pregnant while BFing did so accidentally because they assumed no period therefore no ovulation....

I have got pregnant 3 time while breastfeeding so definately possible!
Each time I hadn't had any periods so I cut down night feeds and that got things going again.
My babies were much older than 7 months though.

DS is proof of this working.

I started ovulating and nine months, got pregnant, miscarried, got pregnant again at ten months, and DS is the result. Come to think of it, he's nearly ten months old now eeek!

Ah thank you ladies!

DP (for all his gynaecological knowledge ) had convinced me that it was impossible!

Now if I can only find the time and the energy to actually try for another one

Don't want a massive gap between my babies and dd is such an easy happy baby I think she's lulled me into a false sense of security that the next one will be the same!

As a side benefit of this, I haven't had a period since ummm 2005! Hopefully I can keep this up to the menopause at this rate

I conceived ds2 while ebf dd, who was 8 months and still feeding 2 hourly night & day!

It's one of those things where every woman is differerent.

There are plenty on here who have managed to conceive when their babies are pretty young.

And then there's me who's DS is 3.6yo, still feeding (but only morning/bedtime and once or twice through the day) but I have found it impossible to conceive (apart from last year when I got pg but didn't get past 6 weeks), despite trying for the last 2.5yrs.

You are not going to know where you are on the spectrum until you try!

Your DH is right that it's impossible while you are not ovulating because of breastfeeding, but if you know how to spot the signs of your fertility returning, then it it technically possible.

here's a bit about it on Kellymom

Good luck

I conceived DS2 5 months after having had DS1 , admittedly I had just stopped BF the week before.
Depending on how often your DS still BF, particularly overnight, your cycle/ovulation will return even whilst still BFing. You can conceive before you have had your first period.
But, yes, you WILL have to have sex for it to happen !
FWIW, my period returned when DS3 was 8 1/2 months old as he was eating more solids and slept through most nights at that point.
Good luck!
