What is the minimum a 8m old can have? DS not feeding & ill

DS is having a hard time feeding - he has tonsillitis and I think it's hurting him as he was mouthing to latch on but just wasn't. He had a feed about 4am, then mid morning, then 2 small feeds this afternoon - he normally feeds every hour or so daily and all evening. He gulped down a cup of water earlier after refusing to feed which I had to give him as his mouth and lips were going dry. Is that enough?

i think that sounds fine

as long as he is getting milk/food/liquid in some form he will be ok.

if he is finding it easier to drink from a cup atm then you could express and feed him from the cup or give him more water to ease his throat he'll soon go back to feeding from you

hope he is ok soon

I really find it hard to express - early days are OK but my nipple just seems to be sucked in to the pump like it's too flexible and nothing comes out. Although I am very engorged now (just exploded and getting mastitis in one) so I will try again...

are you using an electric or manual pump?

i found i couldn't get anything out with an electric one but have always found it easier with a manual one

Both - Isis and a big medela (?) one. Do I have to sterilise at this age? I don't fancy digging out the steriliser from the loft! Or can I shove in milton/water? Isis does usually work abit better but I have to compress aswell.

You can just put things through the dishwasher, or even just a good scrub and rinse in hot water with Fairy or something.
I can't believe I faffed with a steriliser for so long, but apparently BM has a natural anti-bacterial effect so sterilising is unecessary.
Hopefully if you are v.engorged then you should get an ok amount, I find it easier to express then.

I think if he's had that water then he will be fine, has he eaten any solids? I can see how latching would be painful on the jaw, poor little man.

LadyOfWaffle · 29/04/2009 22:50

No solids today - he just threw his dinner around. I will try the expressing now and just put in a bowl of milton. THankyou

i have the avent one too and have always found it to be good for me, sometimes it takes me a while to get the milk flowing when i express and i do have to sit there for a good 5-10 mins or so before anything comes out but then it flows easily after that

is your baby on lumpy/finger food? you could try giving him a soft baby puree instead for a couple of days until his throat is better

sparklesandwine · 30/04/2009 19:04

how are you getting on today?

LadyOfWaffle · 30/04/2009 21:58

He is feeding better from the breast - he woke and latched on while my pump was in milton last night Thanks
