Hi baby 2 weeks old

He has horrendous nappy rash, which mw said was not thrush, but my friend who is a health visitor thinks it is thrush.
Its very red with raised little spots all over his bum its obv painful for him. We are only using water to clean him and he still screams

I am finding bf VERY painfull in the nipple area esp on the right side and the only releif I get is to squeeze the breast as he is feeding.

I have used caneston on his bottom for 4 days now and it has not made any difference, so I am going armed with the breastfeeding netwrok leaflet and am going to demand treatment, but I need to be convinved its thrush.

Anyone else had similar problems

Please reassure me it will get better as I keep crying and dreading the feeds

Thanks x

Can you see a RL bfc as well as a GP. It does depend on the GP. Some are really well informed on bf, some not so much. glad you have the BfN leaflet. There are other possibilities other than thrush but you def need a medical and a breastfeeding expert to see what you are dealing with. Poor you and your poor LO. I hope you get it sorted out soon.

thanks where would I get a RL bfc?

I have spoken to l leche and NCT and none of them offered a real life bfc......

Hi Lilymolly, congratulations on your LO

Nipple pain is horrible, but once you have the root of it sorted things will be so much easier. these first few weeks are really hard, but it does get better

Re his nappy rash, I would have thought that if it was fungal the canesten would have made a difference by now; it could be infected though and needs some antibiotics. All of mine had horrible nappy rash when tiny due to the constant pooing. Metanium cream, cold chamomile tea to wash them and lots of air time helped.

nipple thrush can often be misdiagnosed when the pain is down to something else like a bad latch, and I'm not an expert, but I would have thought that if you get relief when you are squeezing your breast as he feeds is making me think that perhaps his latch on that side isn't optimal and you squeezing the breast is helping him get a better latch, if that makes sense. Be careful though as putting pressure on your breasts can lead to blocked ducts and mastitis.

It's common to have a worse latch on one side than the other and most babies have a favourite side. Have you tried feeding him rugby ball hold on the painful side?

I would second some one to one advice from a BFC or someone who has had appropriate training. Is there a local baby cafe or BFing group that you could go to? they usually have BFCs on hand to help

LackaDAISYcal · 14/04/2009 09:45

Baby Cafe

I notice from your profile that you are in the NE.....local support information here

I also know a couple of MNers who are BF supporters who are in your area.....I'll point them in this direction

will check again . I've pointed the NE ladies over here.

A bit more local

Hi lilymolly Where do you live? Hope the Dr visit is useful. I'm sure you'll have the info among the stuff you got given after birth but there is a bf support group at the surestart centre in Gilesgate if you are Durham City based. I can't offer any moer infor than that though but I'm sure more shall be along soon.

If you feel you can make it with a tiny one then come to our Durham meet up and Foxytocin will make sure you eat plenty of cake to make you feel better. She may be even more obsessed with cake than I am

lilymolly · 14/04/2009 10:46

Oh Hi

Live near Lanchester.....but gilesgate not a million miles away!

What days do you meet?

meet up thread here not a set thing, just when someone fancies one they yell so feel free to suggest another one if you can't make it.

Am trying to think which other surestart centres they had groups at now and failing miserably. Your HV should be able to tell you though even if she can't offer any advice herself.

LackaDAISYcal · 14/04/2009 11:05

any of these local to you?

foxytocin · 14/04/2009 11:17

Hi Lilly:

is sensitive skin in your family?

i ask coz both my girls react to certain disp nappies causing horrible bum rash.

you didn't describe your nipple pain v. well but thrush in breasts are a deep pain which gets worse in the hour after feeding. i haven't had any personal experience with it myself but that is what the literature suggests. Sometimes, pain from poor latch can also be confused with thrush pain.

by all means, take the leaflets to the doctors but also get checked out by a BFC. Some attachment and positioning suggestions may come out of it.

if you are finding it difficult to come up with bfc let me know by CAT.

lilymolly · 14/04/2009 11:25

Hi yes I suppose we have a little bit of sensitive skin.

I have swapped between 2 different type of nappies.

Pain is in nipples only not actually in the breasts. I have read though, that nipple thrush and ductal thrush are different types of pain and that nipple thrush is localised to the nipple and ductal thrush is felt within the breast tissue.

3 diff midwifes have all observed latch and think its perfect

I will CAT you foxytocin to get a BFC if thats ok.
