Combined pill and BF

Hello. I went back on the combined pill last week, Microgynon. I raised with the GP whether this was compatible with BF and he didn't think it was a problem at all as DS is now 3 months old and BF is well established.

For the last three days DS has been very unsettled and unhappy, crying as if in pain. I'm not aware of any decrease in milk supply (though I don't know if it would happen within a few days of starting the pill) and his feeding has been more or less the same, certainly at night, but is if anything less frequent in the day. I have to wonder if it's the pill, but the medical evidence that I've read on the hinterweb suggests it should be fine by this stage.

I'm inclined just to come off the pill and see if it makes any difference. Does anyone have any experience of BF and the combined pill? DS is also very fussy about feeding (except at night) just at the moment. Tbh we don't know what to do with him. He's usually been a good napper but now screams the place down when he's put in his cot in the day, and sometimes at bedtime. It's almost like a fear response. Does anyone have any idea what could be going on??

My GP said it is best to avoid the pill if still BF (she suggested the coil or condoms), but I don't know whether her advice applies just in the early days after giving birth, or generally for anyone bfing at any stage.

If you are worried, you could try coming off it, although there are a lot of illnesses around at the moment so it might be unrelated to the pill, something your DS has picked up?

Hopefully someone with experience will be along soon.

kellymom doesnt advise using the combined pill until after 6 months and when the baby is onto solids. Have you considered using a mini-pill as this has less effect on milk supply?

Really shouldn't take the combined pill when breastfeeding, progesterone only is ok, but that can also inhibit milkproduction for some women.

Hmm. Mini pill doesn't suit me, we had endless scares with it last time. I'm on the list to have my tubes tied but it won't be for a good few weeks yet. So far milk production doesn't seem affected but I'm tempted to come off it anyway. GPs eh??

I could never remember to take the mini pill on time so got the implant this time. Was very quick and painless to have inserted and works really well for me.

I've come off it for now and it may be a coincidence but DS is his happy smiley old self - you should see DH though
