Acne? Is it connected to bf hormones?

Firstly, I love bf and am committed to continuing for the forseeable future! It'd take more than horrible, spotty skin to make me stop - but that's what I have. I've had acne since I was about 6 m pregnant, and DS is now 13m. I think it's acne because the same spots get inflamed again and again, unlike the pre-period spots I used to get, which came up anywhere. My chin's particularly bad. A friend who's bf for the same length of time has the same problem.

Is it related to the hormones that keep the milk coming? Has anyone successfully treated this while continuing to breastfeed? Am about to jump on the Oil Cleansing Method (just as soon as me castor oil arrives!) so perhaps that'll help.

I am interested to find this out too. I have never had spots since being a teenager - until recently. I am BF DS2 who is 15 weeks. It is very annoying.

i akm suffering the same thing - as i did last time with DD1, i dont think there is anything you can do. just ride it out. one good thing about breast feeding hormone is that your hair remains thick...when you stop bf it starts to fall out!

yes I disagree munteria - your hair falls out after having a baby no matter how you feed and keeps going until about 6-7 months then it abruptly stops. And grows back stupidly.

Although I'm very prone to spots and find that when bf my skin is better - only until my periods come back though

my skin has been awful since bfeeding. horrible hormonal style period spots. painful ones!
dd is 14months, and they are still here...
doctor prescribed a cream, which drys them out, but to be honest it doesnt help much, just makes the skin look burnt, and very dry.
simple soap and water twice a day did help for a while, and i had previously tried all the products under the sun. but it seems to have lost its magic over the last week or so. spots are back!
eeek. sorry not much help really.but atleast youre not alone

MamaHobgoblin · 10/04/2009 22:29

Sorry, I forgot to check back!
Hmm, looks like I'm stuck with them then. I'm now paranoid that the rest of my hair is going to fall out when I stop (now that would be a good thing to tell MIL - I'm not stopping, I'll go bald!).

Well I've been suffering from acne for the last couple of years, with the same spots coming up each month - although I'm perimenopausal. It's definitely hormonal.

i had angry red spots all over my chin while bf. stopped bf and spots went but my hair fell out

motherhood is just all glamour isnt it

You should try sudocrem for spots, it works brilliantly if you put it on over night! I suffered quite bad when I was pregnant but started to go away afterwards, still get some lingering now though.
