Is it normal to have periods while excl bf?

Hi, is it bad to get periods while excl bf? I got them again when DS began sleeping through at 3 months. Could this affect supply? Just worried this could be related to my low supply (af has made me anaemic as very heavy) Thanks.

DS is now 5 months excl bf 8-10 times a day.

It is within the range of normal. You are not a freak or ill.

Mine came back at 4 months (I excl BF to 6mo and only weaned at 20mo), and I know loads of people it's happened to, so think it's very common (though annoying!).

I've never heard of periods affecting supply. Could it just be that LO is more efficient at feeding, so it just seems like there's less milk?

Definitely normal and can impact supply.Mine came back at 4 months this time and supply goes down in the few days before. Just results in dd2 having a feeding frenzy for a few days and they bounce back pretty quickly once it comes on.

MumOeufMonsters · 05/04/2009 15:05

yep. DS3 still not sleeping thru (at 1yo) but mine came back at about 3 months too, was feeding very 2 hours day and night at the time.

It may be that your milk tastes a little different - no idea if its true, i read it somewhere!

Thanks all good to know it's not unusual or anything to worry about!Bf DS has been a challenge from the start but it's been worth it

yup feeding every 2hrs day and night when they came back at 4 months. DD does get fussy around the time of ovulation and my period but I fed exclusively for 7 months, keeping her on the 99th centile or above and am still feeding at 23 months- still on the top centile! So supply fine, periods normal but they can be a bit fussy when your hormones change.

I got one at 5 weeks even with BFing every 2-3 hours, is that normal?

MrsJenM · 07/04/2009 08:49

With my DD I excl breast fed and my periods started again at 6 wks. She fed almost constantly (or at least it felt like it) and is fine.

I believe I'm fairly normal (don't ask my friends) and my daughter is now 3 and fine (and just had a DS who is now 6 wks old, so lets see if I start soon - hope not, would like a break!)
