8 week old bf, boobs no longer get hard before a feed, is this normal?

I am worried she might not be getting 'good stuff' as she only put on 1oz this week and the HV made faces...had been between 5 and 10 per week before that. So I am paranoid and have noticed that my boobs are no longer getting rock hard before each feed - but I am also trying to feed her more frequently so might this be why? She hads been doing midnight, 4am then 7am at night but last night and the onebefore fed loads and loads - maybe its just a growth spurt? Does the hardness/engorgement subside with time?

Thats fine, mine settled down like that, but could always feel which one was slightly heavier to know what side to start on

yes completley normal - your breasts have just worked out exactly how much milk your baby needs. well done on doing so well

yes, completely normal. you can't spend the rest of your life looking like pamela anderson. your breasts get much more efficient at producing milk, so in fact it is a good sign. then after about 3 months (that's what happened this time, can't remember last time) they shrink a bit, and eventually you end up with perfectly servicable, lactating breasts that are the same size they started at. that's what happened to me anyway.

Hi dan

As others have said, very normal. Your boobs have started to settle into milk being produced on a real demand and supply basis. If it is down to a growth spurt as well though, you might find them like barrage balloons again in a day or two!!

I remember posting the same thing when this happened when DD was a baby (I never got to that stage with DS1) and again when I could no longer feel my letdown reflex.

Re her weight gain......has she been putting on much more per week until this week or has it been getting gradually less each week and that's what's making the HV go . how old is she now?

LackaDAISYcal · 04/04/2009 19:09

nope janek.....22 weeks in and mine are still mahoosive , but less brick like than they were!!

dan39 · 05/04/2009 12:33

Daisy hi!! It has been a bit gradual - gone from 10 to 6 to 5 to 5 to 4 to one...is that a worry? She is 9lb 7 now...

It is totally normal. Can I ask why she is being weighed weekly? Is she peeing and pooing and alert?

LackaDAISYcal · 06/04/2009 10:43

not a worry as such dan if, as mears asks, she is alert and peeing and pooing lots.

Weekly weigh ins are counter productive ime, as their weight can go in fits and starts, so if you left it till next week she might be gaining at the same rate as before iyswim. Also, if she has had a feed or done a huge poo prior to being weighed it can make a real difference to the results.

also, is it the same scales that she has been weighed on previously?

lots and lots of variables! If she is happy and alert, nursing frequently and well and producing lots of wet and pooey nappies (this really is the key), I would be inclined to think it's a one off and nothing to worry about.

the average gain is usually between 4 and 6 ozs a week so she has been doing fine until this week.
