he is dairy intolerant and been a nightmare to wean, so i am still bf on demand, but he just seems to what to suck constantly and i feel completely empty.
seems like its just comfort, but why so much? I have had pnd so maybe understandable, but its constant and i'm getting so fed up again with it. I want to continue but just a couple of times a day and night

Does he have any other type of comforter other than you? a favourite cloth, teddy? maybe try giving him another comforter when you feel it's a comfort feed he's looking for.

Also do you offer him water could it be thirst? Maybe try giving him some water in a cup instead of all these daytime breastfeeds, you must be shattered.

Or a dummy? I know I will get flamed for that but that sounds like a nightmare.

ok so what happens when you try to stretch it out a bit - does he go mad?

Going from every hour to a couple of times a day and night is a big ask - think you're going to need [whispers] a bit of a routine...

and is it circular as well - so he's not getting a really satisfying feed because he is feeding so often and so needs to feed so often to be satisfied. Can you start on a weekend just stretching him out when you've got some help? How does he nap if hes feeding so often?

kalop - call one of the helplines, and talk about maybe making gradual changes to his feeding.

Yes, it is understandable, as you say, that he is like this after your PND. But you can help him find comfort in other ways too, now...just not suddenly

Having said that, is he really, really feeding 24 times in 24 hours?

kalo12 · 24/03/2009 15:34

yes, its been every 20 mins from about 12 onwards in night.

last night i stopped feeding at 3 am and he cried with me and dh soothing him till half five then he slept til half eight. so i am hoping to try that a bit.
