OK - the truth - did you lose weight breastfeeding?

Sitting here with DC wondering if I am ever going to be my pre-pregnancy weight again - did breastfeeding help you lose weight? and if so how long did it take?

I have heard such mixed views and need consoling that I won't be in maternity gear for ever....

no was fat as a house!

MrsTittleMouse · 19/03/2009 20:53

Not really - I lose a bit of weight, but also it makes me so hungry that I get a real butter/cheese/chocolate habit. It's quite fun being able to be a complete pig, mind you.

gemmiegoatlegs · 19/03/2009 20:54

yes. I was pre preg size after about 3 months with ds and 6 weeks with dd

QueenFee · 19/03/2009 20:58

I couldn't stop losing weight was eating to keep it on (lucky me) I was 11 stone pre pregnancy and went down to 9 stone whilst BF. I felt far too thin (I'm quite tall)

Penthesileia · 19/03/2009 21:03

Yes - I lost the "baby weight" within a few of weeks, and kept if off. I am now a stable weight, despite eating like a horse and having chocolate and cake every day. I love breastfeeding. It's going to be tough to train myself off eating cake when DD stops!!

thehairybabysmum · 19/03/2009 21:04

With ds1 i put on weight, did eat a lot of chocolate and was bloomin starving all te time as well.

A few lbs with ds2 but i think that i didnt have the same time to just sit around and drink tea eating chocolate this time round.

Both times weight came off ok once i stopped bf. With ds1 still hadnt lost baby weight when i got pg again but now wiht ds2 i am now back to pre ds1 weight (not the same shape htough and never will be i guess). Have been to hypnosis for weight loss thogh this time and it worked great.

Academicmum · 19/03/2009 21:51

No - with ds1 (FF) I went from 8 to 11 stone during preg and was back down to 8 within 3 months. With ds2 (BF) I gained the same amount when preg but still that last half stone stubbornly refuses to budge (after 10 months). The fact I eat enough to feed a small army may not be helping though...

I don't know if it was the breastfeeding that did it, but 10 days after I'd had DS2 I was back to my pre-pregnancy weight.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 20/03/2009 09:51

No. But just stopped b/fing, so guess I have zero excuse now

Jenbot · 20/03/2009 09:58

Yep, I've gone very thin for me, and I never stop eating!

Wisknit · 20/03/2009 10:09

I did with both DSs hoping it'll happen with DD. I also ate and ate and ate. I love BF.

AitchTwoOh · 20/03/2009 10:18

no, i put weight on while bfing both times. i had a RAGING hunger, i was like a mad woman. it wasn't cream cakes in my case, just ordinary food but obviously more of it than the baby was extracting.

OrmIrian · 20/03/2009 10:19

No. Put it on mostly. But that's because I ate too much and often the wrong things. Was so hungry all the time.

princessmel · 20/03/2009 10:20

Yes deffo. In fact I was so thin people were asking my friends if I was actually eating. I was, just feeding alot.
I was at my slimmest when dd was coming up for 1.

OrmIrian · 20/03/2009 10:20

I lost lost straight after the birth. And then piled it back on again slowly.

Wisknit · 20/03/2009 10:22

i suppose it depends on what you eat though. embarrassingly my snack of choice is a rice cake - spread with hummus if I'm feeling greedy.

francagoestohollywood · 20/03/2009 10:29

No, I put on weight while breast feeding, I could have eaten a horse!

spiralqueen · 20/03/2009 10:39

Yes - which was just as well as I had a wedding dress to get into

I think it helped that DDs placenta weighed a stone on its own, plus she was 8lb2 so that got rid of a lot of it straight away. I was back wearing pre-pregnancy stuff within 3 months and I definitely wasn't dieting cos I can never be ars*d with dieting.

floradora · 20/03/2009 11:43

Sadly no - was size 8-10 pre pregnancy, didn't get especially big while pregnant, am now squeezing into some size 12s but more of a 14 , or even a 16 up top. Each boob must weigh about a stone though so I'm hoping it'll go more easily when I stop bf. Am less active than before, but when I've tried to cut down on food I haven't managed to lose so much as a pound, so I reckon I should just be sensible (mostly) and sort it out when I stop (and get back to work and rushing around like an idiot). I also have lots of lovely clothes (especially undies) packed away mouldering in a wardrobe..

mothersmilk · 20/03/2009 11:43

drastically so with both dd and ds they eat me to nothing!!!! i hate it no matter how much i eat it makes no difference and everyone feels obliged to comment on it does make me laugh how people think its ok to tell me im much to thin and it doest look good yet they'd darent say the same to a fat person not to there face anyway

Divvy · 20/03/2009 11:50

No, and still bf my nearly 8 month old!

I have still got just under 4 stone to lose as well!

Greedygirl · 20/03/2009 12:53

I am thinner than pre-pregnancy but I used to come home and veg out and now I don't stop all day, plus I still feed my DS, plus I moved to a three storey house, plus my DS is on the hefty side so I do regular weightlifting! So it must be a combination of things rather than just the bfeeding I think. When I slow down in a few years no doubt it will all go back on.

Gorionine · 20/03/2009 12:58

I bfed 4 DCs and have not lost any weight that way. I will wait for dd4 to give up bf to go on a diet.

ShowOfHand I have a similar experience (run just once a week though, but the reast fits).

georgimama · 20/03/2009 13:01

I lost my pregnancy weight really really quickly. I didn't lose any additional weight but I wasn't trying to.
