How much milk to express?

I'm going to start expressing so my other half can do some feeds...

How much will I need to cover a feed? My DS is 6 lbs 4 oz and feeds every 3 hours ish...

My baby was a bit bigger than that when he was born (7lb 10oz) but at about 2 weeks he took about 3oz of expressed breast milk, and then it went up to 4oz when he was about 3 or 4 weeks old. Hope that helps but they're always different!

In my experience, the maximum I can express is always magically exactly the amount DD needs - so when she was younger I was able to express 5oz or 6oz (ish), and now she's bigger, being weaned and taking much less milk (she's 9 months today), it's usually 3oz max. Although you might be more cow-like than me and be able to express ad infinitum?

From your post it sounds like you haven't yet started expressing? If it was me, at the beginning, I'd get DH to give the bottle when I was around so that if it wasn't enough I could always finish the feed off myself, until you are used to however much your DS needs.

Good luck! Hope it goes well!

Should probably have mentioned that I didn't start offering expressed milk until my DD was 10 weeks or so, so don't get worried that she was taking 6oz at birth or anything!
