Teething - any recommended remedies?

My 5 month old has just started teething and seems to have very sore gums. He's got a few of the teething rattles and soothers which go in the fridge, but I was wondering if anyone can recommend any good gels or powders to put onto his gums? I don't want to get into the habit of just giving him Calpol every night!

Ashton & Parsons infants' powders (from Tesco/Boots etc), only about £2.60 for a box of 20 powders. I've used them for all five of my children, my dd3 is 4.5 months old now and I've been giving her the powders for a couple of weeks now and they really sooth her .
