Breastfeeding questions

DD2 (eek ) is 3 days old and breastfeeding is going ok I think but just wondered if anyone can give advice on the following (didn't bf dd1 due to IUGR/inability to latch etc etc).

  • How often should a newborn be feeding ? - How long should she be feeding for ? I was told an hour by one MW in hospital but this seems a long time ?

Am sure there aren't definitive answers but a range would be good.

When ahe chooses to feed she seems to feed really well but she is stil quite sleepy during the day and if woken for a feed doesn't feed very well. She also went last night from finishing an hours feed at 11.30 till I woke her at 5 and then she wasn't very interested. I hand expressed some to give to her instead.

MW should be coming this afternoon so will check with her

My wee boy (6 weeks now) fed every 4 hours from birth and now sleeps 8 hours at night.

My fisrt was totally different, however - he needed lots of food during the day, maybe every 3 or 4 hours and same at night.

I think you sound very lucky!
Long may the sleepiness continue!

DD fed little and often as a new born. She was never more then 20 minutes on the breast.

They are all different!
First few days, ds fed 6 hours and 8 hours- non-stop. then he switched to 15 mins, now he's about 10 mins every 3 or 4 hours or so (6 weeks).
I know other babies who feed for an hour every 3 hours...
You just have to let them decide what they need.
My dd never fed well when woken for a feed. helped if I undid her sleepsuit, played with her feet or ears or hands... blew on her face sometimes...

Thanks

MW just been too. Confirmed she doesn't have tyo be feeding for an hour as per the MW said in hospital but need to make sure she feeds at least once more in the night.

Blimey there's always something to worry aobut !
