Breastfed baby needs water from a cup?

Just been for our 7-9 month review. And have been told I need to give the baby water in a cup,and/or milk...my milk I presume?

I dont see the point in expressing my milk to give him in a cup....is there any point?

Does he need water, its not summer yet?

He is 7 and half months.

Surely if he is thirsty, he can have a quick drink from me, as I know when he wants a drink?

I understand "they" want them to drink from a cup by 12 months, but its not as if he is going to sleep with a juice bottle in his mouth, is it! So really cant see my breast damaging the lay out of his teeth!

Just carry on breast feeding untill you are happy to wean and offer cows milk in a sippy cup at 12 (if you choose to stop bf then, otherwise i wouldn't bother). You can offer a cup of water with meals doesn't matter if he doesn't drink it. Your milk is the most important thing untill 12 months. Its good to teach them to use a cup if only it is a few sips, but Bf babies don't need the extra liquid as they are able to get all they need from their feeds.

12m that should be. If you carry on breast feediing longer than 12 the feeds will probably drop and he may want a drink in cup out and about.

DS has had a cup of water with meals since we started on solids, but more to learn to drink from a cup.

I can send him off with DH or MIL and a cup of water confident that he won't go thirsty.

i hate the way she has made me question myself

I started both of mine with water in a cup (doidy with meals, sippy the rest of the time) at about 9ish months, mainly because they could see everyone else had a cup and by that age wanted a bit of the action, but until then just breastmilk.

When DS was 3 months he was prescribed gaviscon. I asked the pharmacist about the best way to give it to him, he was horrified that DS wasn't drinking water (it was january) . I introduced a cup of water along with solids at 6 months

I agree with the others - there's no hurry. Similarly, though, there's no harm in offering a cup of water to play with during meals - esp if everyone else at the table has a drink.

Oh but just to add...I have been thinking about digging out the breast pump to put some in a sippy cup to leave with DH to give DD so that I can go out for a few hours. That's another issue altogether though. If you're not intending on going out or anything then I don't think you need change anything.

Thanks, I will carry on as I am for while longer I think. I dont need to leave him with anyone. I dont think he needs a cupor water just yet. thanks all
