Stopping bf on one side only - 6 months

A is 6 months old this week. On the right breast, we're an advert for breast feeding - happy baby, no pain, he's fairly calm, no leaks, etc. Can see why people carry on for a year or more.

The left side has always been more problematic - I don't think the cracks from day 2 have ever really healed, but mainly A likes sliding off sneakily so i don't notice until it really hurts, and that breast still leaks a lot especially at night, so about 4 nights a week I wake up soggy. Tried different positions whic don't really help. Sometimes a few days will be fine but then he gets chompy and i feel i can't do this any more.

bfc suggested that as my supply is well established and he gets more milk on the right already (because I take him off the left when he chomps/bites/plays silly buggers), I could just give up on the left all together.

I'm very tempted. Anyone done this?

Bumping for some help.

I'm sorry I haven't done it myself, but I do know lots of people who have always fed lots more on one side than the other, and there's at least one east Asian society that only ever feed from one side. So I know its possible!

The last few months I fed my LO from one side only. Only twice a day mind.

I am now somewhat lop-sided, in terms of one boob a rather different size and shape to the other. Fortunately I don't care too much, nor does DH.

Haven't done it myself, but one of the leaders at the LLL group I go to fed from one breast for years. I'm sure you'd be fine

yes indeedy
I fed mostly from the right breast for a long time (months/years), as did two of my friends. no problem with it at all especially with an older baby.

This is interesting. DS seems to have bad latch on one side and I frequently end up with a cracked nipple. He feeds like a dream from the other side, it's bizarre.
I'm feeding him from one side only at the moment to allow the cracked nipple to heal - oh the bliss of finally having the confidence in my supply to do that.

I think that if things don't improve I may end up feeding from just my 'good' side.

Does your body adapt or do you have a permenant rock boob that leaks everywhere on the side you aren't feeding from?

My last 2 DCs ended up wih just the left side, there was far more milk and they gave up on the right. It made me lop sided but went back to normal, both times, when I finished.

harpsichordcarrier · 10/03/2009 00:07

no, I wasn't lopsided. well. no more than usual
my breasts just adapted.
clever things

I was huge on the left and normal size on the right-I was worried that it would get stuck like that! Happily you can't tell now.
