He's 3 years 10 months. Since he was 3 I've had in mind that I'd prefer him to stop when he was 4 ish. We've talked about it lots of times, but I still wondered if he'd ever reach the point where stopping would be by agreement or if it would become a bone of contention after his birthday. Then over the last few weeks he's dropped from 3-4 times a week to once a week and just a couple of swallows, maybe only on one side. It's been a very gradual decline in requests. On Friday he heard that a friend had stopped bf and been given a special present. That was it. He announced he was stopping. This morning, he came and asked for milk, and I asked him if he was sure. He said "Yes, but this is my last milk ever". So, later on I went out and bought him the helicopter he wanted and wrapped it for him. Now if he asks for milk, I will remind him about his helicopter.
It's not natural term weaning, but it suits us. I have tandem fed for almost 19 months and am a few weeks into a new pregnancy. I feel now is a good time, and ds was smiling about it. It's funny just sitting here thinking back on it all. I couldn't possibly have imagined this when I was pregnant or in the nightmare early weeks. I'd have been horrified at the thought, but it's been great.
So here's to my big boy and on to the next phase .
