my daughter is now coming up to three weeks old and is having both breast and bottle feeds. she has breastfeed followed by a bottle, she will breastfeed for hours at a time without getting full so i was advised to breastfeed her for about 20 mins then give her a bottle of formula which we have been doing pretty much from the start.

The only problem is that when she has the bottles she ends up choking on it and it tips out of the side of her mouth and she males funny clucking noises with her tongue

she alsio gets terrible wind from them

the teats are the slowest you can get so what am i doing wrong!

hello sophie. sorry i am in a rush but quickly, who advised you to give formula?

if things are not going well with breastfeeding then it is surely better to fix that, not supplement with formula because that will affect your supply.

i'll be back later, can post breastfeeding helpline numbers if you would like.

Have you had her checked for tongue-tie?

well its al ong story but she was bottlefed for the first 5 days then i switched to breastfeeding her, she had really bad jaundice and was in hospital she wouldnt wake up to feed and we were told to give her bottles as well until the jaundice went as she was getting dehydrated. She is fine now and the jaundice has gone and she has just gone back past her birth weight the last few days.

I would like to cut out the forumla feeds but after three weeks of only partially breastfeeding Im not sure if I have would have enough breastmilk for her or how to build the supply back up without risking her losing wieght again

I dont know what tognue tie is but she doesnt make the noise when she breastfeeds only from the bottles

thanks

sophie

hello again sophie. i should think she's taking quite a lot of formula, so you'll need some real life help to work out how to reduce it, increase the bf and sort out your supply.

here down right hand side numbers. do ring them.

i didn't get ds latched on for five days and had a lot of trouble getting feeding established, but with the help of a bf counsellor it was all fine in the end. stick with it it is very satisfying.

i should also think she is finding that that the milk comes rather fast out of the bottle and is being overwhelmed, but ask bf counsellor cos i am no expert.
