biting

hello

am still breastfeeding my 9-month baby but have had a big problem for the last few weeks. She keeps biting me - hard - at every feed. It's usually right at the start of the feed, or towards the end when she's not really hungry any more. It's SO painful and it's making me really nervous at every feed.

Any ideas??

You have my sympathy. My 9 month old likes kneeding and pulling at my breast and occasionally turns her hand to biting!

The advice I've read suggests saying "no" clearly and taking them off the breast and putting them down for a few seconds. Then resume feeding.

Just started, so I'll let you know if it works.

As per usual Kellymom has good info on this.

hold her securely and push your breast towards her face with enough pressure that she has to release in order to breathe.

do this every time she bites and she'll get the message after a couple of weeks.

obviously don't suffocate her!

i do that and then continue to feed. if she bites again, do it again but don't continue the feed (take a break and try again).

thank you for the advice. I do shout NO at the top of my voice (impossible not to!) but she just laughs. am worried this is turning into a game for her.

will try the smothering technique, although hard not to pull away out of pure self-preserving instinct.

ow.
