Did you find it impossible to lose weight, or worse, did you gain weight whilst breastfeeding?

This happened to me and I'm gutted about it.

I'm sick of reading stories from slebs who claim it was breastfeeding that helped them shed the pounds.

Yes, that may have been the case for very many people, but not all of us!

I've started a facebook group so please join if this happened to you, or if you have any inspirational stories as to how the pounds just dropped off when you stopped!

I bf for almost 2 years, and never shifted the final stone (of the three I put on while pg). The first 2 stone dropped off, mostly fluid loss I think. The last one just wouldn't go. Like a lot of others, I was constantly hungry while bf, and I think I developed some bad eating habits. I'm pg again now, and have no clue what I weigh, but the first time round I was in size 10 maternity clothes, this time it is 14-16

I'm BF a 13-month old, I'm half a stone lighter than I was when I got pg, and always ravenous peckish. Have never eaten as many biscuits in my life!
I went through a period of weighting a pound less every time I stepped on the scales, but it seems to have stabilised now. My mum was the same, she got very very thin and had to resort to eating family bars of Yorkie to try and gain weight .

Wasn't meaning to boast there by the way, in fact I hit post instead of preview as I was thinking maybe I wouldn't post, but it's just to illustrate that everyone's different and everyone's bodies respond differently to breastfeeding and the other things that we do. I don't know why I lost so much weight, I wasn't trying to, it just happened.

I just joined your facebook group! I am bfing my DD and getting fatter despite dieting. Hurrah . With DS I didn't lose any weight until I stopped feeding him. I am planning on feeding DD for a year, so hello fatty until 2010! I have about three items of clothing that actually fit and no coats!

God it's depressing.

I gave up breastfeeding two weeks ago and am eating significantly less and exercising more and I have....

....put weight on!

I wonder if there's some kind of medical condition that can make you put on weight after pregnancy.

have lost nothing since having ds 5 months ago. stopped bf 2 weeks ago and still lost nothing. not trying too hard but still.....

BouncingTurtle · 21/02/2009 17:03

I have been struggling to lose weight but the weight is now starting to come off (ds is nearly 14mo!!), lost half a stone in 4 weeks. No idea why I am eating a bit more healthily though.

Slebs tend to have an army of trainers/nutritonists/nannys/chief cooks and bottle washers to help them lose weight... but bfing does help!

I did lose a lot of weight when I first had ds but some of it went back on because I was soooo hungry all time!!

I put on weight whilst bfing with all 3 of mine and then with the first 2 lost it gradually after stopping. I am still bfing ds2 at 22 months but down to only about once or twice a week. When he got to about a year and cut down on feeding i started to lose some but it has been very slow and stop start although I think that is down to my motivation and energy levels as much as anything. I am determined now to lose weight by the summer whether he continues feeding or not!

Hyperemesis in both pregnancies - only a few pounds heavier at term both times. One week after both babies I was a stone lighter.

8 weeks into breastfeeding both times I had put two stone on! I cannot lose it - I have tried every approach from weight watchers to starving myself to eating what I like but low amounts to exercise - it does not budge. I am someone who puts weight on easily and loses it easily - half a stone in a week no problems usually. With breastfeeding, nothing.

I know it is not just breastfeeding per se - its me being exhausted, sleep deprived and feeling my only vice is chocolate and cake. Also sitting on the sofa too much and not being able to get to the gym or swimming. I get upset my clothes dont fit - then I look at DD and know its all worth it.

Blowinonabreeze - how many extra points do you get for breastfeeding on the WeightWatchers points system? I though I might do the points at home but wasn't sure how many extra points to allow myself.

NoseyHelen · 21/02/2009 23:02

I've joined the facebook group!

Have just discovered this thread (although it was last updated ages ago)... Thought I'd revive it to see if I could get any tips. I'm still bf my DS (he's 7 & a half months). I share the experience most of you have described; i.e. I lots loads of weight (70% of my pregnancy weight) in the first few weeks after giving birth. And then the last 4 kilos (about 9 pounds) are just stuck there.

I'm now on a kind of healthy eating plan / diet (called the No-S diet) for the last 2 weeks or so, & even though I've vastly improved what I eat & how much, nothing has come off so far!
