hyperthyroid medication

My daugther is 4 months old and two weeks ago, I learned I am hyperthyroid (again) and need to take PTU. I have read that it is generally considered safe to take while b/f as only a small amount passes to babies, but I have also read that the medication can impact on longer term brain development. I'd like to continue to b/f but only if there is really no risk.

Help? Anyone have more information?

Don't have more info really, only that I suffered from this condition after both my births, and both times I b/f while taking PTU. I was told it was OK.

Hope you're feeling OK

The info you have is correct, mumsue - I have checked in Hale (textbook with evidence on thousands of meds and bf). It is the 'best antithyroid' med for lactating mothers. Advises monitoring infant during therapy, but there have been no paediatric concerns reported.

I have to say neither of mine were monitored - they both appeared fine, but they are both barking mad now - maybe this has something to do with it??
