9 months. I think it's just because he's teething but it is sore!

Teething will do that, you may have a tiny but very painful sore that your DS keeps opening. My 20 month old son is doing that with his bottom eye-teeth atm. I really don't know what to say other than that I feel for you! He'll soon get used to using it but OUCH in the meantime
