Hello. Lately my nearly 6 wk old has begun to make an almighty fuss at the boob, wailing his head off after a few moments feeding. Last night, in desperation, we gave him a bottle of formula (I know all the drawbacks of formula so no lectures please!) and he happily took 4oz.
He woke for his usual night feeds (usually three), and fed without a murmur, as he did this morning. But when I tried to feed him just now all the wailing and fussing began again, but then he happily took 2oz of formula then gave me two huge smiles
I can't understand why this fussing is intermittent. Obviously if it's going to be ongoing I'll express for him - I do now but just didn't happen to have any EBM to hand at the vital moments.
Overall I'd say his milk intake is dropping, he's feeding less often for shorter times. It's no big deal though as he's immense, off the scale for growth, so he's not about to fade away. I just want to understand what's going on. Crazy though it may sound, it looks like there might be teeth about to appear on the bottom gum. I really struggle to believe this at not even 6 weeks, but there is definitely an increasing whiteness in the centre of his bottom gum. If he is seriously teething it would explain his frequent grumpiness and reluctance to put pressure on his gums - it must be much easier to suck on a latex teat than press a nipple into action.
Anyway, teething apart, if anyone has any ideas or clues to understanding this I'd be grateful. Thank you.
