How many breastfeeds does my 13month old need?

that's my question really! I bfed DD until she was 18months but she had lots of feeds in the day at this age whereas DS will only take a feed first thing and last thing (then usually one or two in the night but to be honest I am sure he's not feeding he's just comfort nibbling).

Would it harm him dropping his evening feed and only giving him a breastfeed in the morning? Possibly I could express in the evening and give it to him in a cup the next day so in theory still two feeds a day?

He hasn't had any formula so he is only having cows milk and water in the day.

The reason for this is Im about to start a an evening college course and return to work and all of that means I wont be home for DS's bed time.

No problem with one feed when you are not there. You can give more feeds when you are home. No need to exress unless you wanted to particularly.

I fed DS2 till about 14 mo but by about 11mo or so he was only having morning and evening.

Personally I felt I was doing it as much for me as him (he didn't seem that bothered) as he was my last

I think yr DS will be fine. Just make sure you are offering lots of drinks during the day. No need for formula at all at this age.

Clary · 20/01/2009 22:24

Sorry I mean yr DS wil be fine if you drop late feed.

Just pretty busy Clary - I like to still drop in from time to time. Nice to see you too

thanks for the advice.

My HV is the type to say just stop bfing all together as no need past 1 but I would like to keep going for a bit longer.

Although I must say he seems to have to suckle for a really long time before he gets a let down, is that normal?

Yes it is normal. Please do not worry about it because that has an impact too. Your breasts have been very efficient - why would they pack in now?

You're doing well - carry on for as long as you like

Agree with mears, no need to stop now, don't listen to most HVs on the subject of breastfeeding!
I feed DS2 (20 months) twice a day and never feel the let down anymore, think at this stage this is quite normal (was the same with DS1, he fed till he was 2).

I am still BF my 17mo DTs and they have been on only one a day (first thing in the morning) since about 14mo and no other milk at all during the day, just water. I have found it liberating as it means that other people can put them to bed!

tumtumtetum · 21/01/2009 21:36

My DD had gone down to 1 feed a day by about 12mo, she had a good feed in the morning and otehrwise had cows milk/water.

She dropped the morning feed when i went back to work when she was 13 mo.

She is 18mo now and is absolutely fine - your DD will be fine too on one feed a day and you can always feed her more if she wants when you are around

fishie · 21/01/2009 21:44

yes as all others have said will be fine. i've found it is fairly easy to be flexible without any supply problem by 13m. i went back to work then and am still feeding 2 yrs later.
