my 3 month old just had a big, thick-ish green poo! he is mostly breastfed, with one bottle of formula at night.

is he teething? is it the formula? any ideas?

many thanks

Green poo happens for a few different reasons. Dr Jack Newman says we worry about it far too much and all new parents should be issued with sunglasses.
It usually means that the poo has travelled through the baby's system a little faster than it normally does. This is sometimes because they have taken in a little more foremilk than normal - so perhaps you've got a touch of oversupply following a growth spurt or something. But it doesn't always mean that.
If he's teething then extra saliva could cause things to move more quickly - although he would be on the young side for teething.
It can also be the only sign of a mild virus or tummy bug.

Green poo really isn't something to worry too much about provided baby seems happy and weight gain overall is fine. If it's a one-off I wouldn't worry at all. If it persists and you are concerned then you could phone a bf helpline but green is considered within the normal range for bf baby poo by most people.

All of mine had green poo from time to time and at one time might have had it for up to a week at a time.
They are all fine now!

thanks for the reassurance. the mild virus as well as growth spurt are both possible explanations. does defo seem too early for teeth.
